‘Gladiator’ Sequel Released 24 Years Later

Ridley Scott has spent the last decade revisiting many of his monumental successes. He directed two prequels for Alien, produced a sequel for Blade Runner, and now, he’s made Gladiator II, 24 years after the original film’s colossal impact and its Oscar win for Best Picture.

This time around, the cast does not include Russell Crowe or Joaquin Phoenix. Instead, the sequel features Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington, alongside Joseph Quinn and Connie Nielsen, who reprises her role from the original film. Set some time after the events of the first Gladiator, Mescal’s character, a warrior, becomes embroiled in a new struggle for the control of the Roman Empire.

The trailer suggests that the sequel retains the stylistic elements of Scott’s original Gladiator. Based on that glimpse, it looks like it might be a worthy follow-up! You can judge for yourself…

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

From legendary director Ridley Scott, Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome. Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people.

Gladiator II is scheduled to open in theaters on November 22. And for his next long-awaited sequel, some fans hope Ridley Scott will consider directing The Duellists II
