Glen Powell Addresses Backlash Over ‘Twisters’ Kiss Controversy

Actor Glen Powell has addressed the controversy surrounding the kissing scene, or rather the absence of it, in the movie “Twisters.” The sequel to the 1996 tornado-chasing hit “Twister” was originally going to feature a kiss between Powell and his co-star, Daisy Edgar-Jones. Although a kissing scene was filmed, it was ultimately omitted from the final cut of the movie that premiered in theaters last month.

Some fans have expressed disappointment over the missing scene, noting that it would have mirrored the kiss shared by Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton in the original 1990s movie. Despite the outcry, Powell maintains a positive perspective on the situation.

“I’m taking it very personally!” Powell jokingly told Screen Rant this week. He added with a laugh, “I’m sure you’ve seen the behind-the-scenes, where I did get to kiss Daisy Edgar-Jones, which really is all that counts.”

According to Powell, the passionate responses from the audience show that “people care, which is really great.” He mentioned that both he and Edgar-Jones have enjoyed seeing the “TikToks and the gifs” that fans have created in response to the film. This reaction has sparked what Powell calls a “conversation and cultural moment.” He concluded, “So, kiss or no kiss, everybody’s a winner.”

In July, Powell and Edgar-Jones spoke with Collider and provided some insight into the decision to cut the kissing scene. Edgar-Jones suggested that the omission was likely due to a note from Steven Spielberg, who was an executive producer for the original 1996 film.

“I think it stops the film from feeling too cliched, actually,” Edgar-Jones explained.

Powell further clarified that the new movie focuses less on their characters finding romantic love and more on Edgar-Jones’ character reconnecting with her true passion: storm-chasing.
