Glen Powell wasn’t originally slated to show off his physique in “Twisters,” but unexpected rain led director Lee Isaac Chung to make a last-minute decision. Powell found himself in a scene with a wet white T-shirt in the natural disaster movie.
“That was Isaac’s idea,” Powell revealed at the film’s Los Angeles premiere. “I had a jacket for that scene, but he decided to toss it. Then he mentioned a rain machine, and I realized what was happening.”
This unexpected moment in the movie, a sequel to the classic tornado thriller “Twister,” was well-received at the premiere, drawing applause and cheers from the audience.
Powell humorously noted that he didn’t do any extra push-ups for the shot, responding with a laugh, “Not enough.”
Director Chung recalled, “I thought it would be impressionistic. Once we started rolling, I realized what I’ve done. Everyone urged me to keep going. I aim to please.”
The production of “Twisters” faced real-life weather challenges while filming in Oklahoma. Ironically, a set prepared for a tornado sequence had to be rebuilt after it fell victim to a real windstorm. “We had a big set at a farmer’s market, and a wild storm hit,” Daisy Edgar-Jones recounted. “We watched from the windows, thinking, ‘Oh, no!’”
Chung wished he could capture the real storm on camera but emphasized safety concerns. “As a filmmaker, I asked if we could roll on it, but the answer was no for safety reasons,” he said. “We took pictures for reference instead.”
Edgar-Jones recently shared with Variety’s Ellise Shafer that she and her “Normal People” co-star Paul Mescal bonded over their respective training for “Twisters” and “Gladiator 2.” She commented on the recently released “Gladiator” trailer. “Wow, he was far more ripped than I was,” she said of Mescal. “It’s so cool. I’m excited for him and can’t wait to see it. He worked so hard on it.”
“Twisters” will be hitting theaters on July 19.
