Glen Powell Resembles Tom Cruise in College Football Comedy Series

Glen Powell is back in the spotlight.

After his roles in the college-themed films “Everybody Wants Some!!” and “Hit Man,” directed by Richard Linklater, Powell is stepping into a new genre. He’s now portraying a college quarterback in the Hulu comedy series “Chad Powers.”

Powell, who co-wrote “Hit Man” with Linklater, has taken on multiple roles for “Chad Powers.” He is the co-creator, co-writer, executive producer, and star of the show, which is inspired by former NFL player Eli Manning’s sketch series. Powell teamed up with Michael Waldron to co-create and co-write the pilot episode.

The show’s premise reads: “When bad behavior ruins hotshot quarterback Russ Holliday’s college career, he disguises himself and joins a struggling Southern football team as the skilled and likable Chad Powers.”

In his new role, Powell uses a prosthetic to transform into a character that bears a striking resemblance to his “Top Gun” co-star and mentor, Tom Cruise.

Manning is also an executive producer on the show, along with Peyton Manning, Jamie Horowitz, Ben Brown, and ESPN. The series is based on a sketch produced by NFL Films and Omaha Productions for ESPN+ as part of the “Eli’s Places” series.

Other executive producers include Waldron and Adam Fasullo from Anomaly Pictures. Luvh Rakhe also serves as an executive producer, with Tony Yacenda as director and executive producer. The show is produced under Powell’s company, Barnstorm Productions, and will be released by 20th Television.

The series was first announced in early 2024.

“We’re both diehard college football fans. When we saw Eli as Chad Powers, we knew that was the way into a big, fun story about this world,” Powell said in a statement with Waldron. “We’re excited to be part of this team, and can’t wait to get Chad in the game. Think fast, run fast.”

Manning added, “The love for Chad Powers has surprised me in spectacular ways. I played 16 years in the NFL, but now when I’m in a restaurant or walking through an airport, it’s not uncommon for fans to scream, ‘Hey Chad!’ I’m so excited to team up with my friends Glen Powell, Michael Waldron, and Omaha Productions to continue to tell the Chad Powers story and see what he does next.”

The production of “Chad Powers” has officially begun, with the premiere date to be announced later.

Besides his new TV role, Powell also confirmed the development of “Top Gun 3.” During an appearance on the “Today” show, Powell hinted that the third installment of the franchise is “happening at some point.”
