Glen Powell Teases Mysterious Hint About Top Gun 3

Glen Powell might be stepping back into the cockpit soon for Top Gun 3.

In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell, stars of the upcoming Twisters movie, faced an intriguing question. Horowitz asked them whether a continuation of Normal People or Top Gun 3 was more likely to happen first. Powell responded, “I mean, I have a date,” hinting at some concrete plans for Top Gun 3.

Horowitz followed up, asking if Powell had inside information he couldn’t reveal. Powell, with a hint of mystery, suggested they move on to the next question. This cryptic response suggests that Powell might know more about the upcoming sequel than he is letting on.

Top Gun 3 is the highly anticipated third installment in the Tom Cruise-led franchise. Following the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022, a third movie seemed inevitable. Maverick managed to reunite original stars like Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer while also bringing in new faces, including Powell, Miles Teller, Lewis Pullman, and Monica Barbaro. Jennifer Connelly also starred, taking on the role of Penny Benjamin.

What took many by surprise was Maverick’s colossal success at the box office. Despite releasing almost three decades after the original movie, it raked in nearly $1.5 billion globally. Domestically, it pulled in $718 million, while overseas earnings stood at $776 million. If Avatar: The Way of Water hadn’t hit theaters the same year and garnered over $2.3 billion, Maverick would have been the highest-grossing film of 2022. Only two other films crossed the $1 billion mark that year, with Jurassic World: Dominion among them.

The announcement for Top Gun 3 came in January 2024, with Cruise, Teller, and Powell all set to reprise their roles. Director Joseph Kosinski and writer Ehren Kruger are also returning, ensuring consistency in the story’s continuation.

Glen Powell’s journey to stardom began long before Top Gun: Maverick. He had early roles in films like Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, The Wendell Baker Story, and Fast Food Nation. He continued to build his resume with small parts in notable movies such as The Dark Knight Rises, The Expendables 4, Ride Along 2, and Hidden Figures. Powell also appeared in Set It Up, a romantic comedy that gained him some attention.

However, his significant break came from his role in the TV series Scream Queens, where he played Chad Radwell from 2015 to 2016. While he led in the first season, his character moved to a recurring role in the following season.

The year 2022 marked a turning point in Powell’s career. He reunited with Richard Linklater, director of Fast Food Nation, for the movie Apollo 10 1/2: A Space Age Childhood. However, it was his role in Top Gun: Maverick that truly catapulted him into the mainstream. He followed this success by starring and executive producing Devotion, a war drama film with Jonathan Majors.

Powell’s momentum continued in 2023 with another notable collaboration with Linklater. He co-wrote and starred in Hit Man, which premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival before being acquired and released by Netflix. The film arrived in theaters in May 2024 and later on Netflix the following month.

Powell’s rise didn’t stop there. In the latter part of the year, he starred alongside Sydney Sweeney in Anyone but You, a romantic comedy that became an unexpected box office hit, grossing over $220 million. Currently, Powell is starring in Twisters, portraying a storm-chasing social media influencer named Tyler Owens.

As fans eagerly await official news on Top Gun 3, Powell’s increasing prominence both in and out of the franchise continues to capture Hollywood’s attention. With his diverse roles and blockbuster successes, Powell is undoubtedly a rising star worth watching.
