GoldDerby: TV Awards Contenders

“Bad Monkey” is anything but. Vince Vaughn stars in the entertaining Apple TV+ adaptation of Carl Hiaasen‘s 2013 novel about a former Miami police detective living in the Florida Keys. After being suspended for sending his lover’s husband’s golf cart into the ocean, Andrew Yancy (Vaughn) has plenty of free time. So when a tourist discovers a severed arm while deep-sea fishing, he becomes intrigued, especially when the young widow (Meredith Hagner) claims the appendage for a funeral.

The series, with its first two episodes now streaming, was developed and executive-produced by Emmy winner Bill Lawrence. It balances an engrossing central mystery with a well-honed sense of humor. With Vaughn’s trademark charm and snark on full display and a Tom Petty-inspired soundtrack, “Bad Monkey” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.

You don’t have to stop your TV jet-setting at Florida, though—other contenders include:

  • “Emily in Paris”: If the Summer Olympics didn’t give you your fill of the French capital, Netflix’s lighthearted romantic comedy returns for the first half of its 10-episode fourth season this week. The new episodes pick up in the wake of the wedding that wasn’t and find Emily (Lily Collins) trying to salvage her relationship with Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) after Camille (Camille Razat) revealed the American marketing maven has been in love with Gabriel (Lucas Bravo) all this time. All five episodes of Part I are now streaming on Netflix.
  • “OceanXplorers”: No one loves anything as much as James Cameron loves the ocean, which is why it’s no surprise to learn the Oscar winner produced this new series about a team of scientists and experts aboard OceanXplorer, a state-of-the-art research vessel. Across six episodes, the team investigates the depths of the world’s oceans, from the Arctic to the Caribbean to the mid-Atlantic, pushing the boundaries of marine exploration and revealing the mysteries of the deep. The show is co-produced by BBC Studios’ Emmy-winning Natural History Unit. It debuts with two episodes Sunday at 9/8c on National Geographic. The episodes will stream Monday on Hulu and Disney+.
  • “RuPaul’s Drag Race Global All Stars”: The Emmy-winning reality competition franchise is going global. For the first time ever, 12 queens from around the world will represent their countries as they compete for a $200,000 cash prize and the chance to be named “Queen of the Mothertucking World.” Those competing include Alyssa Edwards, Athena Likis, Eva Le Queen, Gala Varo, Kitty Scott-Claus, Kween Kong, Miranda Lebrão, Nehellenia, Pythia, Soa de Muse, Tessa Testicle, and Vanity Vain. The first two episodes are now streaming on Paramount+.
