Golfer Daniel Brown Hopes Parents Missed Him Smoking on the Course

Despite warnings from doctors, many people still enjoy having a cigar or cigarette, especially when they’re out on the golf course, and professionals are no exception. It’s well-known that two-time major winner John Daly likes to smoke a few cigarettes and drink Diet Coke while playing. Recently, LPGA player Charley Hull was seen smoking while signing autographs in a viral video. In other sports, Oregon football coach Dan Lanning was spotted with a stogie while declaring he wouldn’t take the Alabama job, and LSU’s Alexis Morris recreated Joe Burrow’s iconic cigar celebration photo.

So, it’s clear that some folks continue to enjoy smoking. Among them is Daniel Brown, who has surprisingly risen to contention entering the final day of The Open at Royal Troon. Through three days of play, 29-year-old Brown is three-under and tied for second place entering Sunday’s final. This is the first major that Brown has ever played in, having qualified just three weeks ago. Notably, his brother is serving as his caddy.

On Saturday, as Brown walked Royal Troon, he smoked a couple of cigarettes and took selfies with fans. He seems to be thoroughly enjoying his time—puffing on cigarettes and driving balls at one of golf’s four major championships.

However, Brown prefers to keep this habit away from his parents. When asked about it on Saturday, he mentioned:

“I only really do it when I’m golfing, to be honest, so I suppose it could be a coping mechanism. … They do know, but I don’t do it in front of them.”
