‘Gone With the Wind’ and ‘Blood Feud’ Producer Dies at 88

Daniel Selznick, a former Hollywood producer and executive celebrated for being the youngest son of legendary film producer David O. Selznick and theatrical producer Irene Mayer Selznick, passed away on Thursday at the age of 88.

He died of natural causes at the Motion Picture Country Home in Woodland Hills, California, as confirmed by the Motion Picture & Television Fund. Known for his intelligence, charm, sweetness, and generosity, Daniel left a lasting impact on the residents of the MPTF.

Born May 18, 1936, in Los Angeles, Daniel Selznick graduated from Harvard University, attended the University of Geneva, and did graduate work at Brandeis University. Following in his family’s illustrious footsteps, he pursued a career in the entertainment industry, including a four-year stint as a production executive at Universal Studios.

His father, David O. Selznick, who passed away in 1965, was the mastermind behind numerous iconic films such as 1939’s Gone with the Wind, 1946’s Duel in the Sun, and 1933’s King Kong. His mother, Irene Mayer Selznick, who passed away in 1990, was the daughter of film mogul Louis B. Mayer and earned a Tony Award nomination for the 1955 play The Chalk Garden.

Daniel Selznick, together with his older brother Jeffrey Selznick, who died in 1997, produced the Peabody award-winning documentary The Making of a Legend: Gone with the Wind. The documentary offered a detailed look at how their father created the cherished 1939 film.

In addition to his work on the documentary, Daniel produced several other notable projects. These include the TV mini-series Blood Feud, Hoover vs. the Kennedys: The Second Civil War, Night Drive, and Reagan’s Way: Pathway to the Presidency, which he also directed.

Daniel also served as the director of the Louis B. Mayer Foundation for several years. His endeavors in the theatrical world included presenting a light comedy, The Man with the Perfect Wife, starring his stepmother, Jennifer Jones.

During his time at the Motion Picture Country Home, Daniel penned his memoir, Walking with Kings. The book is scheduled to be published next year by Alfred Knopf.

Previously married three times, Daniel Selznick does not have any immediate survivors.
