‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Kevin McKidd Joins BBC Drama ‘The Primrose Railway Children’

The Primrose Railway Children

Kevin McKidd, known for his roles in “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Six Four,” is set to star in the 90-minute CBBC special “The Primrose Railway Children” on BBC’s kids channel, CBBC. Adapted by Tom Bidwell, who also worked on “The Velveteen Rabbit” and “The Irregulars,” the feature-length family drama draws from Jacqueline Wilson’s novel of the same name, a modern reimagining of E. Nesbit’s classic “The Railway Children.”

The project is scheduled to be filmed in various picturesque locations, including Glasgow, the Scottish Highlands, and along heritage railways, according to BBC Studios Kids and Family Productions.

The story centers on Phoebe, her older sister Becks, older brother Perry, and their mother, who experience a sudden upheaval from their comfortable life in Glasgow. They are unexpectedly moved to the remote highlands of Scotland. “A story about growing up, being displaced, and finding your way in a community that seems alien, ‘The Primrose Railway Children’ is set to become essential family viewing,” BBC Studios stated.

Kevin McKidd will play the father, Rob Robinson, alongside Nina Toussaint-White, known for her roles in “Bodyguard” and “Witness Number 3,” who will portray his wife, Sarah Robinson. Emerging British talents have been cast for the children’s roles: Ava McCarthy as Phoebe, Ida Brooke as Becks, and Tylan Bailey as Perry.

“Reading Tom’s brilliant script was a real joy, it captures the spirit and emotion of the original ‘The Railway Children,’ a film that I loved as a child, so it was an easy decision to come back and film this in Scotland,” McKidd expressed. “I can’t wait to step into the character of Rob and retell this reimagined British classic story alongside such an exciting cast. It will be a cinematic treat for the family.”

Tali Walters, the creative director at BBC Studios Kids and Family Productions, added, “We are proud to be making this dramatic and ambitious production in Scotland with all it offers in terms of locations and talent, and very much looking forward to sharing it with families across the U.K. and around the world.”

“The Primrose Railway Children” is produced by BBC Studios Kids & Family Productions, with Tali Walters as the creative lead, Alison Davis as the executive producer, and John McKay as the producer. The feature is set to be directed by Julian Kemp. BBC Studios is handling international distribution, with filming set to start this month.
