The Shape of Water director Guillermo del Toro has reported being disturbed by a supernatural presence while staying in a hotel in Scotland.

Del Toro, renowned for his films that delve into the weird, spooky, and occasionally horrific, posted a series of messages on social media about a room he chose in a hotel in Aberdeen. According to him, the room has an “oppressive” atmosphere, and he felt that “something is in that room with me”.

The Mexican director revealed that he opted to stay in the room after it was vacated by one of his producers due to “odd electrical and physical occurrences” that scared her into leaving. Seizing the chance to experience a notoriously “haunted” room, del Toro later stated, “Nothing has happened yet, but the atmosphere in the room is oppressive and I am not gonna spend much more time there.” He added that he chose not to sleep in that room: “I kept [the room] but am sleeping in another room – I need six hours of sleep to have a good shooting day … something is in that room with me.”

Del Toro is currently in Scotland to shoot a new adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel Frankenstein. The film features Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the Monster.

Del Toro added, “I always stay in ‘the most haunted room’ but only once did I experience anything supernatural. The rest of the time: nothing. I have high hopes.”
