Gunfire Exchanged Between Suspect and Security Guard Near Air Force Base

U.S. Air Force security personnel engaged in a gunfire exchange with an unidentified individual early Saturday morning at the Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. when a man in a dark sedan opened fire near the base’s main entry gate, prompting a response from a guard.

According to a spokesperson from the base, the suspect fired several rounds toward the gate before attempting to shoot again. In self-defense, the guard at the entrance drew their weapon and returned fire. Following the exchange, the suspect fled the scene.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of the confrontation. Stefanie Antosh, the public affairs chief, confirmed that details regarding the number of shots fired, the identity of the shooter, and the motive for the attack remain unknown. However, the authorities believe there is no connection between the shooter and the military.

“We don’t know what initiated this encounter,” Antosh stated. “While it’s unclear what the intent was, we can assure you that it posed no active threat to the installation.” She further noted that there is currently no ongoing threat to base personnel or operations.

After the shooting incident, the entrance to the base was closed for several hours. However, the base itself was not placed on lockdown, and normal operations resumed by 10 a.m. the same day.

Local law enforcement from the San Antonio Police Department also responded to the incident, assisting in evidence collection at the scene. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with this shooting.

Attempts to reach a police spokesperson for further information were unsuccessful, as there was no response to calls or emails.

Joint Base San Antonio encompasses several facilities, including Randolph Air Force Base, Fort Sam Houston, and the Camp Bullis training camp. Lackland Air Force Base is a significant installation within the joint base, housing over 24,000 active-duty military personnel and around 10,000 Department of Defense civilians.

The base is notable for its diverse range of operations and training programs, which include the 37th Training Wing, 149th Fighter Wing, and 59th Medical Wing, among others. It also features units associated with advanced military capabilities such as intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and network warfare.
