Gurren Lagann vs. Kill la Kill Starts in Japan

Studio TRIGGER, the creative powerhouse behind “Delicious in Dungeon” and “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners,” originally earned its reputation with iconic series like “Kill la Kill” and “Gurren Lagann.” Although both “Kill la Kill” and “Gurren Lagann” have not seen new anime projects in years, “Gurren Lagann” recently made a comeback in theaters, reintroducing fans to its cinematic roots.

In Japan, Studio TRIGGER has staged an extraordinary anime exhibit titled “Gurren Lagann Vs. Kill la Kill.” This exhibit features original artwork, memorabilia, and even a mech recreation, all celebrating the legacy of these two beloved series.

Despite being products of the same studio, “Kill la Kill” and “Gurren Lagann” offer distinct narratives and settings. “Kill la Kill” tells the story of Ryuko Matoi, a transfer student entering a school with a unique social hierarchy. Armed with a super-powered suit that enhances her combat abilities, Ryuko navigates through intense schoolyard battles, capturing the audience’s attention with its dynamic fights and innovative costumes.

On the other hand, “Gurren Lagann” is set in a post-apocalyptic world, focusing on characters Simon, Kamina, and Yoko. Their journey through a desolate landscape filled with mech battles provides a stark contrast to the schoolyard skirmishes of “Kill la Kill.”

The “Kill La Kill Vs. Gurren Lagann” exhibit is slated to begin on July 12th, making stops at various venues until it concludes on December 15th. Here are the scheduled venues and dates:

– Ikebukuro Parco Factory: July 12-29, 2024
– Nagoya Parco Square: August 3-12, 2024
– Fukuoka Parco Factory: September 20, 2024, until October 6, 2024
– Sapporo Parco Space7: December 6-15, 2024

For those unfamiliar with “Kill la Kill,” the series is available for streaming on Crunchyroll. The streaming service describes the show as follows: “After 6 years since their collaboration on the groundbreaking anime series ‘Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann,’ Hiroyuki Imaishi and Kazuki Nakashima are back to shock the world! Ryuko Matoi is a vagrant schoolgirl traveling from place to place searching for clues to the truth behind her father’s death–the ‘woman with the scissor blade.’ The journey has led Ryuko to Honnouji Academy.”

“Gurren Lagann” is also accessible on Crunchyroll and is summarized as: “This is the story of a man who has yet to realize what destiny holds in store for him… In the distant future, mankind has lived quietly and restlessly underground for hundreds of years, subject to earthquakes and cave-ins. Living in one such village are 2 young men: one named Simon who is shy and naive, and the other named Kamina who believes in the existence of a ‘surface’ world above their heads.”

This exhibit gives fans a unique opportunity to dive deep into the world of TRIGGER’s groundbreaking series, offering a nostalgic trip for long-time viewers and an engaging introduction for newcomers. The blend of original art, memorabilia, and intricate recreations serves to celebrate and immortalize the impact of these two influential anime series.

The thought of seeing both “Kill la Kill” and “Gurren Lagann” showcased together is enough to get any anime fan excited. Whether you’re a seasoned viewer or someone new to these stories, the exhibit promises an enriching experience that highlights the ingenuity and creativity of Studio TRIGGER.
