Guy Totally Misunderstands Eminem’s Bond with Detroit

It’s not uncommon for celebrities to leave their hometowns and not give back to the community that helped shape them. Celebrity life can get pretty hectic, leaving little time for such endeavors. However, one of Detroit’s biggest stars offers a shining example of maintaining a great relationship with the city that made him famous. Enter Eminem.

Yet, one rogue Facebook user seemed to miss this memo. In the public Facebook Group Beats, Rhymes & Lounge, a member not from Detroit criticized Eminem for not doing enough for the city.

The post read: “This is why Detroit barely fw him. Will shoot a video there but won’t be active in or help rebuild his community. Don’t collab with their new wave either. #culturevulture #notlikeus.” Attached to the post was a link to XXL Magazine’s article about the music video for one of Eminem’s latest songs, “Tobey,” recorded in front of his childhood home in Warren.

Interestingly, the scene with Eminem sitting on the steps of his childhood home is CGI, as is the entire video’s background. However, the track features Big Sean and BabyTron — Big Sean hails from Detroit, while BabyTron is from Ypsilanti. Although Big Sean is more established, BabyTron, at just 24, raps for the first 1:40 of the song and carries the chorus. Therefore, it’s evident that Eminem is collaborating with “new wave” artists in this instance.

Moreover, Eminem didn’t just “shoot a video there.” He also played a significant role in reopening the Michigan Central Station in Detroit last June by performing his hit single “Houdini.” Additionally, he was an enthusiastic participant at the NFL Draft in April and vocally supported the Detroit Lions throughout their remarkable 2023 season.

The comments on the criticized Facebook post, which garnered nearly 1,000 laugh reactions, highlighted Eminem’s various charitable activities in Detroit. His foundation, the Marshall Mathers Foundation, notably assists disadvantaged and at-risk youth primarily in Detroit and surrounding communities.

In countless other ways, Eminem has shown his dedication to Detroit. To suggest otherwise is simply unfounded.
