Harris Reminds Trump and Americans She Is a Gun Owner During Debate

During a recent presidential debate, former President Donald Trump claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris and the Democratic Party plan to take away people’s guns. In response, Harris asserted a lesser-known fact about herself: she is a gun owner.

During the debate, Harris momentarily shifted the focus from a healthcare question to address Trump’s accusations. She stated, “This business about taking everyone’s guns away, [Gov.] Tim Walz and I are both gun owners. We’re not taking anybody’s guns away, so stop with the continuous lying about this stuff.”

Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris speaks during a presidential debate with former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump in Philadelphia, Sept. 10, 2024.

Although this was the first time Harris discussed her gun ownership during the current campaign, she had mentioned it previously five years ago while running for president. Back then, she explained to reporters in Iowa that she acquired a firearm due to personal safety concerns stemming from her work as a prosecutor. Her campaign also confirmed that her handgun was stored securely.

In addition to her personal views, Harris has consistently endorsed various gun control measures. These include advocating for universal background checks and enforcing stricter penalties for drug trafficking offenses.

While Trump also identifies as a gun owner, his ability to possess firearms may soon be affected due to legal troubles; following a conviction in Manhattan, his permit is set to be revoked.
