Hear Bryan Ferry’s New Song, ‘Star’

Bryan Ferry has unveiled his first original song in over a decade. Titled “Star,” the track features Amelia Barratt and is part of the upcoming five-CD collection, Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023.

The press release describes “Star” as emerging from a sketch by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails. Bryan Ferry and Amelia Barratt then developed it into a dark, post-techno piece. The song highlights Ferry’s ongoing creative evolution, blending elements of art, music, and poetry. The duo’s collaboration forms an intriguing duet.

The music video for “Star,” directed by Ferry, is available for viewing below.

Ferry shared his excitement about the collaboration, stating that it marks the first song he has created with painter and writer Amelia Barratt. He was genuinely impressed by Barratt’s writing when he helped her record an audiobook at his studio a few years ago. Ferry expressed enthusiasm for this new artistic venture and hinted at more projects to come.

“Star” is one of 81 tracks included in the Retrospective collection, which is slated for release on October 25. The compilation spans Ferry’s entire solo career, covering 16 solo albums over 50 years.

The five-CD set, Retrospective: Selected Recordings 1973-2023, is divided into distinct parts: “The Best of Bryan Ferry,” “Compositions,” “Interpretations,” “The Bryan Ferry Orchestra,” and “Rare and Unreleased.” It features a variety of tracks, including Ferry’s covers of Bob Dylan songs, R&B favorites, instrumental versions of Roxy Music classics, and new material.

Roxy Music was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2019. In 2022, they embarked on a 50th-anniversary tour. Guitarist Phil Manzanera recently announced that this would be the band’s final live performance together.
