Shiloh Jolie-Pitt’s legal endeavor to remove her father Brad Pitt’s last name has encountered a delay, pushing it to August.

“Unfortunately, the court couldn’t finalize the background check in time for today’s hearing, so it has been rescheduled for August 19. This is a normal process,” stated Shiloh’s attorney, Peter Levine, to Us Weekly on Monday, July 29. “Everyone applying for a name-change request needs to undergo a background check by the court clerk. Due to a clerical error, Shiloh’s hearing was postponed.”

Shiloh, daughter of Brad Pitt, 60, and Angelina Jolie, filed to drop Pitt’s name on her 18th birthday in May. A source revealed to Us Weekly in June that Shiloh took the initiative to hire and pay for her own legal representation.

Another insider mentioned that Pitt was “devastated” by Shiloh’s move. “For him, it was more than just a name change — it was a symbol of a deeper estrangement that had been growing for years,” they explained.

In California, legally changing one’s name entails publishing legal forms in a newspaper for one month before a judge can approve the request. This document then appears in the legal notices section of the paper.

Shiloh announced her intentions in the Los Angeles Times earlier this month, stating her determination to change her name to Shiloh Nouvel Jolie.

“As Shiloh’s attorney, I am required by California law to publish a legal notice for anyone seeking to change their name,” Levine explained in a statement to Us Weekly. “The legal notice was therefore published in the Los Angeles Times as required.”

Besides Shiloh, Jolie, 49, and Pitt are also parents to Maddox, 22, Pax, 20, Zahara, 19, and 15-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox. Shiloh becomes the third sibling to distance herself from their father’s surname.

In November 2023, Shiloh’s older sister, Zahara, identified herself as Zahara Marley Jolie during a sorority ceremony at Spelman College. Six months later, their youngest daughter, Vivienne, was credited as Vivienne Jolie in the playbill for the Broadway musical The Outsiders. Vivienne co-produced the show with her mother.

Three of Pitt’s children opting to drop his surname coincides with an ongoing divorce battle with Jolie. The pair, who married in 2014 after nine years together, split in late 2016 following a notorious plane altercation involving their children. Pitt faced child abuse allegations related to this incident but was subsequently cleared.

The ex-couple were legally declared single in 2019. However, their divorce remains unresolved as they contest over the ownership of their shared winery, Chateau Miraval, and custody of their minor children.

In 2022, Pitt filed a lawsuit against Jolie claiming she breached their contract by selling her shares in Chateau Miraval to a third party without his consent. He alleged that this move was intended to “undermine [his] investment.” In response, Jolie’s lawyers argued that Pitt had refused to buy Jolie’s shares unless she signed a mutual NDA. They also accused Pitt of attempting to conceal allegations of “physical abuse” related to the plane incident, which Pitt’s legal team denied.

In May, a judge ruled in favor of Pitt, ordering Jolie to produce all NDA agreements she signed with third parties between 2014 and 2022 within 60 days.

“Those actions are central to these proceedings. We are not at all surprised Mr. Pitt is afraid to turn over the documents demonstrating these facts,” Jolie’s attorney Paul Murphy commented in a statement to Us Weekly in July. “While Angelina again asks Mr. Pitt to end the fighting and finally put their family on a clear path toward healing, unless Mr. Pitt withdraws his lawsuit, Angelina has no choice but to obtain the evidence necessary to prove these allegations wrong.”
