‘Heels’ Premiere on Netflix This Fall

Heels finally has a drop date on Netflix.

Both seasons of the Mike O’Malley drama about the world of small-town pro wrestling will premiere on the streamer Sunday, September 15.

Starz canceled the series in 2023. In April, Netflix and Lionsgate Worldwide Television Distribution Group agreed to a licensing agreement for the two seasons of the series that stars Stephen Amell, Alexander Ludwig, Allen Maldonado, Alison Luff, Chris Bauer, Kelli Berglund, Mary McCormack, Robby Ramos, Trey Tucker, Roxton Garcia, and James Harrison.

“Netflix is very practical,” O’Malley shared with EW, which first broke the news about the premiere date. “If a lot of people watch the show, then there’s a real chance that we can make more. And if people don’t, there’s no reason to make more… The acting performances are so authentic and so genuine by every actor in this series, and I am thrilled that this platform now will be allow more people see those performances.”

Set in a close-knit Georgia community, Heels follows a family-owned wrestling promotion as two brothers and rivals (Amell and Ludwig) war over their late father’s legacy. In the ring, somebody must play the good guy and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to — or hard to leave behind.

In April, Deadline learned there was an option for a third season at Netflix, but that all depends on the availability of Amell, who booked the lead role in Suits: LA, and Ludwig, who’s toplining Earth Abides for MGM+.

“To a person, every single person involved in this show wants to make more Heels,” O’Malley told EW. “The success of Suits: LA will just drive more people to watching Stephen’s work on Netflix. It doesn’t take that long to make a season of Heels. It’s very labor intensive, but there are windows of time during hiatuses to make more.”

O’Malley (Extended Family, Survivor’s Remorse, Shameless) serves as showrunner and writer, and also plays the role of Charlie Gully. Michael Waldron (Loki, Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness) created the series. Heels is executive produced by O’Malley and Waldron alongside Julie Yorn, Rick Yorn, Pete Segal, Patrick Walmsley, and Christopher Donnelly.
