‘He’s a Stud and So Funny’

It’s Travis Kelce’s world, and we’re just living in it. The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, who has expanded his on-field NFL prowess into a diverse off-field portfolio, has landed one of his most coveted gigs.

On Tuesday night (August 20), Adam Sandler confirmed on the Tonight Show that Kelce will be part of the upcoming Happy Gilmore 2 sequel. “Travis has… he mentioned it, so we have a nice something for Travis,” Sandler said about Kelce’s role, which the NFL star publicly expressed interest in earlier this year. “He’s gonna come by. He’s a very nice guy. You guys would love him in real life. What a big, handsome guy. Funny and cool as hell. He’s a stud and he’s so funny.”

Sandler didn’t provide any details about Kelce’s role in the highly anticipated follow-up to the 1996 golf comedy. However, this opportunity seems like a wish come true for the Super Bowl champ. Back in May, on his New Heights podcast with brother and retired NFL player Jason Kelce, Travis shared that he’s a “huge fan of the Sandman” and would do “anything” for a role in the film.

“I didn’t even know there was a job opening on Happy Gilmore 2. I’ll be a f–king extra… anything to get around Happy Gilmore, an Adam Sandler film or set—count me in,” Travis said. Jason was more skeptical at the time, noting there was “really no evidence to support” the theory that his brother might make it into the film. This skepticism arose after a Reddit user mentioned that Kelce was spotted wearing a Happy Gilmore baseball hat on the podcast, soon after the sequel was announced.

“[No evidence] other than the movie’s getting made and I’m looking for movie deals,” Travis teased. “Theories can come true. Theories can be true, and people just don’t know about it. I might even be in the talking, and nobody knows about it, but I could also not be in the talking. I’ll do anything in the movie. I’ll be part of it any way I possibly can.” Travis also speculated on various roles, even suggesting he could play the “jackass” crowd heckler from the original or possibly take over Bob Barker’s iconic role, humorously referencing his upcoming game show stint.

Kelce has been busy expanding his TV and film résumé this year. He has upcoming appearances in Ryan Murphy’s FX horror series Grotesquerie, and will be hosting the Amazon Prime game show reboot Are You Smarter Than a Celebrity?. Additionally, he is pursuing his first lead role in the action-comedy Loose Cannons.

During his discussion on the Tonight Show, Sandler revealed to Jimmy Fallon that the movie will begin shooting in New Jersey in “a couple of weeks.” Kelce, meanwhile, is expected to suit up for the Chiefs in their final preseason game against the Chicago Bears on Thursday night (August 22). The regular season kicks off on September 5 against the Baltimore Ravens.

When Kelce returns to the field, he’ll do so with a new, longer hairstyle. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes recently shared that Kelce’s new look is thanks to his girlfriend, Taylor Swift’s influence. “I’ve been trying to get him to grow his hair out, and all of a sudden Taylor gets him to do it,” Mahomes said during a recent SiriusXM NFL Radio interview.
