Christina Hall, the star of HGTV’s Christina on the Coast, is no stranger to home improvement projects. However, in the premiere of season 5, she takes on a task that hits closer to home—renovating her childhood house for her parents.

Hall recognized that one particular aspect of the kitchen needed an update, something she believes can often be “the star of the show” in any home. This key element is the backsplash.

In the first episode of the new season, Hall and her mom start by exploring various backsplash options. “When you find the right backsplash, you can work around that,” she shares. Initially, they chose a backsplash with gray tones, but Hall’s mom wasn’t fond of gray. This led them to pivot to a different direction. The kitchen floor had red and orange undertones, making it challenging to harmonize with other colors.

Hall emphasizes the importance of bringing samples when selecting materials. “If you want to start with the backsplash as the star of the show or design an interesting stove cove area, it’s important to have a sample with you when choosing counters,” she advises. Different shades of white or subtle color variations can make a significant difference, so having a sample on hand can help maintain consistency in the design.

This season, Hall notices that homeowners are embracing a variety of styles and trends. “What’s interesting about this season, and I’m happy about it, is that my homeowners are all doing a lot of different things,” she explains. Unlike past trends focusing on a single style, people are now blending styles, incorporating different colors and wood tones. “Everyone’s not wanting all white shaker anymore, so people are really stepping out and trying different things,” she adds, admitting that it keeps her job exciting and prevents monotony.

For viewers interested in new designs and styles, the latest season offers a rich variety of inspirations. The new episodes air every Thursday at 9 p.m. EST on HGTV.
