Hoda Kotb Discusses Split from Ex-Fiance on ‘Today’ Show

Hoda Kotb has recently shed light on her relationship with ex-fiance Joel Schiffman. The Today host opened up about their dynamic during her appearance on The Jamie Kern Lima Show on Tuesday, August 13. Despite their split, Hoda and Joel remain a significant part of each other’s lives. So, what led to their breakup? Here’s what she had to share.

Hoda revealed that she and her ex-fiance were “growing at different paces” before deciding to part ways. “I think a lot of people are probably in these situations. One person’s growing… or one person wants it this way, and one person wants it that way,” she explained. The Today With Hoda & Jenna co-host noted that it can be challenging to stay “in sync.”

Despite the end of their romantic relationship, Hoda still holds Joel in high regard. She called him one of “the best people” she knows and described him as a “great human being.” She added, “I feel like I’m a pretty great human being, but sometimes two great human beings together isn’t quite enough to make it work.”

The news of their breakup surfaced in January 2022. After being together for eight years and engaged, Hoda discussed their split on Today With Hoda & Jenna. She revealed that they spent time reflecting over the holidays and concluded that they “were better as friends and parents than we are as an engaged couple.” They chose to go their separate ways and focus on their two daughters, Haley and Hope.

Nothing specific led to their breakup, according to Hoda. “They say sometimes relationships are meant to be there for a reason or a season or for a lifetime,” she said. “And I feel like ours was meant to be there for a season.”

Following the end of their engagement, Hoda and Joel successfully co-parent their daughters. They adopted Haley in 2017 and Hope in 2019. Hoda shared, “He sees the kids. He takes them to school some, and he sees them on weekends. We’ve got a really nice, easy situation.”

Earlier this year, Hoda revealed that she was re-entering the dating scene. In March, she told Kelly Clarkson that she went on a date for the first time in two years. By May, she mentioned going on a third date with a man whose identity remains a mystery. She shared that it felt good to discuss topics other than children and work. While keeping the man’s identity under wraps, she noted, “he’s really handsome.”
