House of the Dragon Ep 7 Recap: The Red Sowing

The penultimate episode of House of the Dragon Season 2, titled “The Red Sowing,” brings some thrilling action and significant developments for Team Black. In this episode, Rhaenyra gathers dragonriders with impressive scenes showcasing dragons in action. Notably, the final image of Rhaenyra with Hugh and Ulf alongside their dragons is quite striking.

We begin with Rhaenyra confronting Addam on the beach, accompanied by their respective dragons, Syrax and Seasmoke. Rhaenyra acknowledges that Addam has claimed a dragon of House Targaryen, and Addam expresses his desire to learn how to ride it, affirming his loyalty to Rhaenyra. He admits his mother is lowborn, while his father’s identity remains inconsequential, but he has served House Velaryon faithfully for years. Rhaenyra seems impressed by his accomplishments.

Meanwhile, Grand Maester Orwyle tends to a wound on Alicent’s arm. However, Alicent, feeling that her unwavering service to her house and the realm has been in vain, seeks a break and asks Rickard Thorne to accompany her to the Kingswood without a retinue or handmaidens.

Elsewhere, Jasper approaches Larys with intel regarding Seasmoke’s new rider. Although the information is flimsy, it hints at significant developments. Larys decides to withhold the information from Aemond for the time being.

Back at Dragonstone, Rhaenyra returns with Addam, who is introduced to Jace, Baela, and Bartimos. Corlys believes they should meet the new dragonrider before passing judgment. There are discussions about training Addam in dragon-riding and High Valyrian, which visibly upsets Jace.

Mysaria advises Rhaenyra on the dragon-claiming process, suggesting that Addam might have Valyrian blood, making him a potential dragon rider despite not being of Targaryen parentage.

Corlys and Addam share a moment, acknowledging their connection without explicitly stating it. Addam requests permission to leave Corlys’s service, which is granted.

Meanwhile, Daemon meets Oscar Tully at Harrenhal to secure House Tully’s loyalty to Rhaenyra, despite the Riverlords’ grievances. Oscar assures Daemon of his loyalty while balancing the demands for justice from the Riverlords.

The episode delves into the political dynamics and allegiances shaping the ongoing conflict, heightening the tension as lines are drawn and loyalties are tested.

At Dragonstone, the dragonkeepers protest against bringing smallfolk to claim dragons. Rhaenyra insists on moving forward with her plan, acknowledging the risks involved. She addresses those who accepted her summons, highlighting the life-altering nature of claiming a dragon.

In the climactic scene, Rhaenyra calls Vermithor forward, commanding him to be calm. Vermithor, initially calm, becomes furious, attacking the gathered smallfolk. Amid the chaos, Hugh manages to calm Vermithor, while Ulf encounters Silverwing, who ultimately submits to him.

The episode concludes with Aemond and Vhagar tailing Ulf and Silverwing to Dragonstone, only to turn back without engaging. The final shot of Rhaenyra and her dragon companions, poised for action, sets the stage for a thrilling season finale.
