House of the Dragon Season 2 Finale Reveals Key Season 3 Character Death

House of the Dragon viewers are perplexed by the show’s decision to spoil an upcoming significant character death.

The second season of the HBO series concluded on Sunday (4 August) with a finale that left many fans feeling disappointed, especially considering the long wait for season three.

Season two’s final episode, titled “The Queen That Never Was,” was generally considered anti-climactic. Furthermore, fans were confused by a scene featuring Helaena (Phia Saban) that appears to ruin a major future plot twist for those who haven’t read the source material, Fire & Blood.

In episode eight, Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) tries to persuade his sister Helaena to join the fight against Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy). She refuses and foretells his death.

“Aegon will be king again,” she begins, adding: “He is yet to see victory. He sits on a wooden throne and you – you’ll be dead. You were swallowed up in a God’s Eye and you are never seen again.”

When Aemond accuses Helaena of treason and threatens to execute her for her comments, she calmly responds, “It wouldn’t change anything.”

While Helaena’s prophecies have usually been cryptic, her confident words indicate she believes her visions to be true. This presents somewhat of a spoiler for fans curious about Aemond’s fate.

“Imagine avoiding reading up on Aemond so you don’t see spoilers, only to have Helaena spoil how he dies,” one fan remarked. Another noted, “I love how suddenly Helaena has no problems understanding her dreams and that Aemond knows his death at least one season in advance.”

Interestingly, Helaena appears in Daemon’s dream, emphasizing his role in the upcoming war. Many believe this confirms his involvement in Aemond’s death.
