How Eve Hewson, Bono’s daughter, avoids the ‘nepo baby’ label

Despite being the daughter of legendary U2 singer Bono, Eve Hewson has successfully sidestepped the “nepo baby” label. Much like her brother Elijah Hewson, who is gaining recognition with his band, Inhaler, Eve has carved out her own identity in the public eye.

In a conversation with Porter, Hewson shared how she deals with criticism regarding nepotism: “The only thing you can do is crack a joke and move on,” she remarked. Reflecting on her upbringing, she described a childhood “filled with conversations about film and music and poetry and literature.”

Initially, before venturing into Hollywood, Hewson harbored dreams of following in her father’s musical footsteps. “The only thing I was any good at” was playing the piano and drums, she admitted, even envisioning herself as a future Charli XCX.

During the pandemic, Hewson and her siblings moved back in with their parents, forming a band from which she was hilariously kicked out for being “too enthusiastic.” Despite Bono’s fame and talent, he didn’t join the band’s activities. As Hewson amusingly explained, “No! He was asleep by 10pm every night.”

Early in her career, Hewson appeared in “Bridge of Spies” and “Robin Hood.” More recent film credits include “The True Adventures of Wolfboy,” “Tesla,” and “Flora and Son.”

Her career is poised for its biggest leap yet. Hewson is set to star in Noah Baumbach’s next film alongside heavyweights George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, and Greta Gerwig. She has already garnered attention with her role in Apple TV+’s series “Bad Sisters,” which debuted its first season in 2022, with a second season in the pipeline. Additionally, she will feature in the upcoming Netflix miniseries “The Perfect Couple,” joining a star-studded cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, and Dakota Fanning. The series is an adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s novel of the same name.

Bono, best recognized as the frontman of the Irish rock band U2, has been heralded for his poignant lyrics imbued with political and religious undertones. With a vocal prowess considered among the greatest in rock history, Bono’s impact goes beyond music.

U2 made their breakthrough with the 1980 album “Boy,” followed by further hits like “War,” “The Unforgettable Fire,” and “The Joshua Tree.” To date, U2 has produced 15 studio albums, with their latest, “Songs of Surrender,” coinciding with Bono’s memoir “Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story.”

In celebration of his memoir, Bono embarked on his first solo concert tour, “Stories of Surrender,” which began in November 2022 and ended in May 2023, culminating in a short residency at New York City’s Beacon Theatre.

U2 also completed their first concert residency as a band, “U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere,” announced during Super Bowl LVII. This residency commemorated their iconic 1991 album “Achtung Baby,” performed in full. The band members Bono, The Edge, and Adam Clayton were joined by drummer Bran van den Berg for the performances.
