Hugh Jackman Reveals Director’s Tricks to Make His Muscles Pop in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Hugh Jackman recently shared a nearly four-minute voice note on social media, expressing gratitude to his team for helping him get into top shape for “Deadpool & Wolverine.” This film marked Jackman’s highly anticipated return as Wolverine, a character he had previously retired after the 2017 movie “Logan.” Thanks to Jackman’s return, “Deadpool & Wolverine” achieved remarkable success, earning $1.2 billion globally and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film ever.

“I’ve had a lot of people asking me how I got into shape,” Jackman shared. “They ask about my diet, my training, and whether it’s difficult at my age. I just want to say yes, I had to work hard, do those deadlifts, and follow a strict diet, but I couldn’t have done it alone. My incredible team was essential.”

Jackman gave special recognition to his personal trainer, Beth Lewis, who has been with him for five years. Lewis played a significant role in preparing Jackman for various projects, from “Deadpool & Wolverine” to his time on Broadway in “The Music Man.” Jackman also praised his makeup artist, Whitney James, for enhancing his muscular appearance on the big screen.

“Whitney, my makeup artist, was asked to apply oil to make my skin glisten,” Jackman said. “Director Shawn Levy would often call out, ‘Fresh lube on Hugh!’ which always brought laughter to the set.”

A considerable amount of oil was necessary for the movie’s climactic power room scene where Deadpool and Wolverine thwart Cassandra Nova’s evil plan. This sequence showed Jackman in peak physical condition.

“On the day of filming, I was in a grumpy mood due to my diet of tilapia and beans and the lack of water the night before,” Jackman recounted. “The team on set did everything they could to make the day go smoothly.”

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is currently playing in theaters nationwide.
