I Didn’t Eat, Sleep, or Drink Enough Water

Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets star Chet Hanks has celebrated two years of sobriety, reflecting on his journey during Tuesday night’s episode.

Hanks shared his experiences with his co-stars, detailing the arduous path he took to get clean. “Two years ago today, I was coming off a three-day coke binge,” Hanks revealed. “I didn’t eat, sleep, or drink water for three days straight. When I got to Vegas, I weighed 190 pounds. By the end, I was down to 163 pounds. I lost 27 pounds in three days. My disease is gnarly. It’s not pretty.”

At 31, Hanks checked himself into rehab once more. Describing his condition, he said, “I was broke, strung out, sucked up, just skinny, and at rock bottom.”

He realized that he needed to change his life drastically. “If I don’t change my life, either I won’t be around, or something really bad is going to happen. That’s where I was headed,” Hanks said.

Fellow cast member Tyler Posey empathized with Hanks, sharing that sobriety connects people no matter what. “I’ve been there for most of my life. I’m impressed by Chet in many ways. He’s still figuring himself out, and that’s endearing for people to see. It’s like, oh, this guy doesn’t have it all figured out. But he’s still doing it and being honest about where he’s at,” Posey noted.

Through perseverance, Hanks managed to turn his life around. “But by the grace of God, I managed to just do the work, get myself clean, get myself sober, and now look. I’m here two years later, having the time of my life,” he said.

The other villa residents, including Macy Gray, O.T. Genasis, Johnny Weir, Josie Canseco, and Kim Zolciak, applauded his journey and openness. Hanks felt good confiding in his co-stars. “I feel like everyone got to know me a little bit better, and it’s real shit, you know,” he emphasized, comparing his castmates to a family.

During the show’s season premiere on July 23, Hanks reflected on growing up with his famous father, Tom Hanks. “Some people are really enamored with my family’s fame. Some people are really resentful about it,” he explained. “So, from a young age, being very aware of that was a lot to process mentally.”

Surreal Life: Villa of Secrets airs on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on MTV.
