Ice Spice, Ghostbusters, Bob Marley, Wayne Brady & New ‘Futurama’

The long-anticipated debut album from Ice Spice and the movie “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” featuring new and old stars from the franchise are among the exciting new releases coming to your screen. Additionally, Wayne Brady opens up his life for a new reality series, and Kate Upton hosts “Dress My Tour,” a competition series where fashion and music intertwine. Keep an eye out for these new television, film, music, and game releases, curated by The Associated Press’ entertainment journalists.

It’s been 40 years since the original “Ghostbusters” hit the screens, and some may feel the franchise should rest. However, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” streaming Monday on Netflix, has its charms. Kumail Nanjiani shines as the reluctant “Fire Master,” and the movie retains a kid-friendly vibe. The Spengler family (Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace) returns to New York, joined by OG Ghostbusters Bill Murray, Ernie Hudson, and Dan Aykroyd. The film has been praised for its modest charm as an ’80s-tinged family adventure.

“Bob Marley: One Love,” streaming Tuesday on Prime Video, adds to the collection of music biopics. Featuring Kingsley Ben-Adir as the reggae legend, the film initially debuted in theaters in February. Despite its muddled approach, the film captures a sincere and textured portrayal of Marley, though it falls short of encapsulating his full power and complexity.

Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” (streaming Thursday on Prime Video) is a historical tale with added action-movie flair. Starring Henry Cavill, the story follows a small band led by an ex-criminal during World War II to sabotage German U-boats. While the film is entertaining, it sacrifices historical accuracy for cinematic exaggeration.

The much-awaited debut album from Bronx MC Ice Spice, arriving Friday, amplifies her unique, laid-back flow with vibrant and often humorous lyrics. The album, titled “Y2K!”, features collaborations with heavy hitters like Travis Scott, Gunna, and British rapper Central Cee. Tracks like “Phat Butt” and “Think U The S— (Fart)” showcase her distinct style.

Australian electronic duo Empire of the Sun is back with “Ask That God,” their first album in eight years, releasing on Friday. Known for their 2008 hit “Walking on a Dream,” their new album promises similarly colorful and maximalist music, with tracks like “Cherry Blossom” standing out.

KCON, a convention celebrating all things Korean culture, from K-pop to K-drama, returns to Los Angeles in 2024 from July 26 to 28. The event will feature performances by NCT 127, P1Harmony, BOYNEXTDOOR, Taemin, and more. For those unable to attend in person, performances will be streamed live on KCON’s official YouTube channel and the CW Networks on July 28 at 8 p.m. ET/PT, marking its first live broadcast on the network.

In television, Netflix’s “The Decameron,” debuting Thursday, is a black comedy set in 14th-century Florence. Loosely based on historical stories, it follows a group of misfits hiding and partying through the 1348 pandemic at a countryside villa. The eight-part series features stars like Tony Hale, Zosia Mamet, and Saoirse-Monica Jackson in a romp full of sex, booze, love, and mortality.

“Dress My Tour,” a new competition series on Hulu hosted by Kate Upton, merges fashion and music. Contestants design looks for different recording artists each episode, with musicians like JoJo Siwa, Toni Braxton, and Ty Dolla $ign judging their creations. The winner receives $100,000. The series premieres Tuesday.

Wayne Brady is known for his roles as an actor, comedian, and host of “Let’s Make a Deal.” Now, he brings cameras into his personal life with a reality series, “Wayne Brady: The Family Remix.” The show follows his unconventional, blended family and premieres on Freeform on Wednesday with streaming available on Hulu the following day.

Matt Groening’s sci-fi animated comedy “Futurama” returns for its 12th season on Hulu on Monday. The series continues to follow Philip J. Fry, a pizza delivery boy who gets cryogenically frozen in 1999 and wakes up a thousand years later. The new season promises more adventures with Fry, Bender the robot, and their colleagues at Planet Express.

For gamers, “Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure” evokes nostalgia for fans of the original Legend of Zelda. With a green-clad protagonist navigating a 2D map to fight monsters and find treasure, the game features unique mechanics where moving the character also shifts the landscape. Developed by indie studio Furniture & Mattress, it boasts vibrant graphics by the artist behind the cult classic Braid. The game launches Thursday, July 25, on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
