Iga Swiatek Remains Undefeated Entering US Open Quarterfinals

NEW YORK – Iga Swiatek secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the US Open after a convincing victory over Liudmila Samsonova, winning the match 6-4, 6-1 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The top seed continued her impressive performance in Flushing Meadows, showcasing her dominance in the tournament.

As the only former champion left in the women’s draw, Swiatek has not dropped a single set this tournament. In a milestone match, marking her 100th Grand Slam appearance, the 23-year-old star lost just four points on her first serve.

Samsonova, the 16th seed, was aiming to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal but struggled throughout the match. She was unable to create any break point opportunities against the Polish player, which significantly hindered her chances.

Swiatek’s next challenge will come from American Jessica Pegula, who she previously defeated in the quarterfinals of the 2022 US Open on her way to securing one of her five Grand Slam titles.

“She has a pretty tricky game style, so you have to really work on your legs and be ready for longer rallies but also for some intense hitting,” Swiatek said about her upcoming match against Pegula. “It’s going to be a challenge.”

In the match against Samsonova, Swiatek quickly applied pressure, breaking the Russian’s serve to love in the 10th game, showcasing her clinical approach. Although Samsonova managed to fend off two break points in the fourth game of the second set, she ultimately succumbed to a double fault, giving Swiatek the crucial break.

Swiatek wrapped up the match with nimble play at the net, winning on her second match point when Samsonova sent a backhand wide.

Despite missing the tuneup event in Toronto, Swiatek expressed confidence in her current form, stating she felt she was finally hitting her stride in New York. “At the beginning, it wasn’t easy to get the rhythm, especially because we kind of put our focus more on recovery than actually practicing before the Slams,” she explained. “I, for sure, am feeling better and better every day.”

As she advances through the tournament, Swiatek’s confidence seems to be growing, and her ability to adapt during matches has been key to her success. Her focus and determination will serve her well as she prepares for the next challenge against Pegula.

Both players will bring their unique strengths to the matchup, making it a highly anticipated encounter for fans and players alike. Swiatek’s experience and prior success in the tournament could give her an edge, but Pegula’s home-court advantage may prove to be significant in this round of the tournament.

With the quarterfinal stage now in sight, the atmosphere around the tournament is electric, and the stakes are higher than ever. As players like Swiatek continue to prove their prowess on the court, spectators can expect thrilling matches filled with powerful shots and intense rallies.

As Swiatek continues her journey at the US Open, all eyes remain on her and the formidable challenges that lie ahead. Fans are eager to see if she can maintain her flawless run and add another title to her impressive collection.
