Ilia Topuria Documentary ‘Matador’ Previewed to Distributors

Spanish sales agent Filmax unveiled its latest project in Madrid, a documentary titled “Matador,” directed by Giampaolo Manfreda. The film focuses on the Spanish-Georgian MMA fighter Ilia Topuria, who recently became a world champion.

Produced by Señor Mono, with backing from Spanish pay TV giant Movistar+ and Filmax, “Matador” had a grand introduction at a press conference in the Spanish capital. The film is set to release in Spanish theaters on September 19 through Filmax.

Filmax has secured international rights and is offering the opportunity for distributors in other countries to release the film around the same time.

Known as El Matador, Topuria clinched the UFC world champion title in a high-profile match against Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski, ending Volkanovski’s four-year reign.

“Matador” documents eight significant months of Topuria’s career, starting with his fight against Josh Emmett in Florida, which propelled him to the global top five in UFC’s fighter rankings. This journey culminates in his title match against Volkanovski.

The film showcases the intense training and personal sacrifices required to excel at the highest levels of the sport. The production team was granted unprecedented access to both Topuria’s personal and professional lives.

Producer Iñigo Pérez-Tabernero stated, “Producing this movie has been one of my life’s greatest gifts. It allowed me to delve deep into the process of how a person becomes a star and achieves all they have dreamed of. More importantly, it portrayed the person behind the celebrity, someone who fearlessly opened their private life for the whole world to see.”

Ivan Diaz, head of international at Filmax, added, “We are sure to have a very busy summer. ‘Matador’ is an immensely attractive product for the international market, wonderfully portraying the process of creating a legend and giving a close-up look at one of the most magnetic figures in international sport and entertainment. We have already seen substantial interest from our clients in the project, and we are confident that the film will make a significant impact in the international marketplace from September until the end of the year.”
