Injured Texas QB Quinn Ewers is questionable for No. 1 Longhorns’ next game

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas Longhorns are facing uncertainty as their star quarterback, Quinn Ewers, is listed as “questionable” for the upcoming game against Louisiana-Monroe. This news follows Ewers leaving the field during the Longhorns’ dominant 56-7 victory over UTSA due to an abdominal strain.

Coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed the status of Ewers on Monday, stating that they will evaluate his condition on a day-to-day basis.

Should Ewers be unable to play, second-year freshman Arch Manning would take the reins as the starting quarterback. Manning stepped in during the game against UTSA and showcased his skills, throwing for four touchdowns and rushing for another.

The injury to Ewers occurred without any contact. Sarkisian explained that it happened while Ewers was attempting a deep pass to tight end Gunnar Helm. Two plays later, during a handoff, Ewers signaled to the medical staff for help and subsequently dropped to the ground, unable to continue.

“On the release, he just felt it,” Sarkisian said. “He realized he needed to get it looked at.” Ewers managed to walk off the field just moments later before heading to the locker room.

For the first time since 2008, Texas holds the No. 1 ranking in the AP poll. Ewers had garnered significant attention as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate following a notable performance the previous week, where he led Texas to victory against defending national champion Michigan. Before his injury against UTSA, he completed 14 of 16 passes for 185 yards, contributing two touchdowns and one interception.

Arch Manning comes from a prestigious football lineage. He is the son of Cooper Manning, grandson of former NFL quarterback Archie Manning, and nephew to legendary Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning.

The ongoing speculation surrounding Ewers’ availability adds an intriguing layer to the Longhorns’ preparation as they try to maintain their winning momentum. Texas is seeking to solidify its position as a national contender after years of ups and downs.

Fans and analysts alike will be keeping a close eye on the updates regarding Ewers as the week progresses. If Manning does get the start, it will be a significant moment in his young career, stepping into a high-pressure situation with the eyes of the college football world upon him.

The Longhorns have shown a revitalized offense this season, and their performance will be crucial as they aim to stay at the top of the national rankings. Additionally, they will need to ensure that their star players, including Ewers, are healthy and ready to compete in the challenging weeks ahead.

As the days unfold, Texas will monitor Ewers closely, hoping for a swift recovery that would allow him to continue leading the No. 1 ranked team. The excitement around this season remains high, with fans eager to see how both young quarterbacks will perform under pressure.
