On August 31, the Israel Defense Forces announced the discovery of multiple bodies in the Gaza Strip, prompting the Hostages and Missing Families Forum to demand that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu negotiate a hostage deal.
The IDF has yet to verify whether the bodies belong to hostages, stating that confirmation will occur only after the bodies are returned to Israel for further investigation, which is expected to take place on Sunday.
“Currently, our forces are on-site and are engaged in a process to recover and identify the bodies, which will take several hours,” the military stated.
Sources within the IDF informed the Jerusalem Post that if the bodies are indeed those of hostages, they were not casualties of any recent clashes with Hamas in the area, as the military had not engaged in combat in that vicinity.
The Hostage and Missing Families Forum issued a statement declaring, “Netanyahu has abandoned the hostages! This is now a fact.”
On a busy Saturday night, thousands participated in protests at Hostage Square in front of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, as well as outside Netanyahu’s official residence. More demonstrations are planned for Sunday.
The Forum’s statement continued, “Starting tomorrow, the country will tremble. We call on the public to prepare. We will bring the nation to a halt.”
Opposition leader Yair Lapid criticized the Prime Minister, saying: “While our sons and daughters are abandoned and die in captivity, Netanyahu is busy spinning stories.” He emphasized, “We will continue to stand by the families and embrace them during these difficult times.”
According to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Hostages and Missing Families Forum, there are currently a total of 107 hostages, both living and deceased, being held in Gaza.
Out of these, 103 hostages were taken during the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7.
