It never really bothered me

Tana Ramsay says her husband, Gordon Ramsay, wasn’t present when she gave birth to their first four kids.

Gordon Ramsay wasn’t in the delivery room when his four eldest children were born, according to his wife Tana Ramsay. During an episode of the ‘Happy Mum Happy Baby podcast,’ hosted by Giovanna Fletcher, Tana shared insights about her IVF journey and the reality of raising six children.

She revealed that her celebrity chef husband opted not to be in the room for the births of their first four kids. Instead, Tana’s mother accompanied her during these significant moments.

“It is very controversial but it just felt right,” Tana told Fletcher on the podcast. “He would’ve gotten all squeamish and probably fainted, and all the attention would’ve been on him, and this is my moment.” The TV broadcaster and cookbook author expressed satisfaction with the decision, affirming that the discussion with her husband did not cause her any distress.

“It didn’t ever really bother me and I actually felt quite happy when we talked about it,” Tana elaborated. “He said, ‘What do you think?’ I said, ‘If you don’t want to be in there, then don’t.'” She appreciated the open communication and mutual understanding that influenced their choice.

However, when it came to the births of their two youngest children, Gordon Ramsay’s approach changed. “I don’t know what changed; it’s just he wanted to be there. I felt it would be nice,” Tana recounted. “I think it was after what we went through with losing Rocky, our little boy.” The couple, who has been married since 1996, cherishes their family of six children: Megan, Holly, Jack, Tilly, Oscar, and Jesse, born in 2023. In 2016, the couple endured the painful experience of a miscarriage of a son they named Rocky.

Preferences for a spouse’s presence in the delivery room can vary widely. For many, the primary labor support person might be a female relative, a close friend, or even a trained doula, depending on what’s most comfortable for the expectant mother.

The duration of labor also varies from one person to another. Therefore, the primary labor support person must be prepared for various scenarios. Key responsibilities can include advocating for the patient, helping them weigh medical options, and providing emotional support throughout the birthing process, as per parenting resource platform BabyCenter.

It was noted that a representative for the Ramsays did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours.
