‘I’ve Never Attended a Sex Dungeon Party’

Macklemore Photograph: JMDM

The first song I remember hearing:
I recall hearing “The Heat Is On” by Glenn Frey from the Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack when I was about five or six. I instantly thought, “Oh my God, I want to be Axel Foley.”

The song I perform at karaoke:
I usually stick to my own songs for karaoke. They’re the only ones I can do successfully. I alternate between “Thrift Shop” and “Can’t Hold Us.” It’s always amusing to see people’s reactions when they catch me performing my own tracks at a karaoke bar.

The song I inexplicably know every lyric to:
I can rap a lot of Lil Wayne. If you play a song from Tha Carter or Tha Carter II eras, chances are I can match you word for word. The album “3rd Eye Vision” by Hieroglyphics is another one I know from start to finish.

The first single I bought:
I wanted to buy “Way 2 Fonky” by DJ Quik at the Sam Goody near my house in Seattle. However, it had a parental advisory sticker on it. So, at about nine years old, I resorted to stealing it.

The best song to play at a party:
It totally depends on the kind of party. Different parties have different vibes these days. It might even be a sex dungeon party! Just kidding—I’ve never attended one of those. I find that “Blue (Da Ba Dee)” by Eiffel 65 is always a hit. When the bass drops, the crowd goes wild every time.

The song I can no longer listen to:
I can’t listen to anything I recorded before 2003. I don’t have a well-known song that I avoid, but anything pre-2003 just doesn’t sit well with me anymore.

The best song to have sex to:
I’ve already made the sex dungeon joke, so I won’t repeat that. After some thought, “So Anxious” by Ginuwine comes to mind. When that track plays, you’ve got to bring your A-game.

The song I secretly like, but tell everyone I hate:
At this point in my life, I don’t really lie about my music preferences. Having kids exposes you to a broad range of music that you wouldn’t usually listen to. I haven’t delved deeply into Taylor Swift’s catalogue, but there are a few of her songs that my kids play which make me appreciate her songwriting talent.

The song I wish I had written:
There are so many songs I wish I had written. If I had to pick one, it would be “I Rule the World (Imagine That)” by Nas.

The song that changed my life:
“Otherside” by myself was a milestone. It was the first time I rapped about my own recovery and addiction. This song connected me with a community of people facing similar struggles. It gave me a new way to introduce myself to the world, especially within the underground scene.

The song I would like played at my funeral:
I would want “Zombie Nation” by Kernkraft 400. Picture this: it’s raining, my friends are carrying my casket, they put me in the ground, and then the party starts.

Macklemore’s latest album, “Ben,” is out now.
