‘I’ve Only Done One Day of Reshoots on My Last Two Films Combined’

James Gunn has completed filming on his upcoming “Superman” movie as of the end of July. However, there’s still considerable work to be done for the 2025 comic book blockbuster. Responding to fans on Threads, Gunn emphasized that the completion of filming is just the start of a lengthy post-production process.

“Heck no. Once you’re done shooting you’ve only just begun!” Gunn wrote. “Still lots of editing, VFX, sound, and scoring to be done!”

When a fan suggested that substantial reshooting would follow, a routine these days for big productions, Gunn had a rather surprising response: “I don’t know. I’ve done a total of one day of reshoots on my past two films combined.”

Gunn’s previous two films, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” in 2023 for Marvel and “The Suicide Squad” in 2021 for DC, were massive undertakings. The minimal need for reshoots on those projects is notably impressive. When asked how he manages to avoid extensive reshoots, Gunn shared six key strategies.

“1) Over-prepare,” Gunn began. “2) Don’t start shooting until I have a finished script my whole team is happy with. 3) Hire actors and department heads I know can do their jobs. 4) Surround myself with people who will challenge me and not just yes-sir everything. 5) Ask myself daily – are there any small imperfections in the script or what we’re shooting that might end up feeling like huge imperfections when we cut the film together? 6) 1 and 2 again!”

Gunn elaborated on his third tip, explaining that there is “usually a lengthy audition process” for his films to ensure the right actors are selected. He added that he performs background checks and speaks with individuals the actors have previously worked with.

For the role of Superman, Gunn has cast David Corenswet, a 31-year-old actor known for his supporting roles in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series “The Politician” and “Hollywood.” Corenswet also featured in the Ti West-directed horror movie “Pearl,” alongside Mia Goth.

Joining Corenswet in the cast are Rachel Brosnahan, an Emmy winner for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” who will play Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult is set to portray Lex Luthor. Additional cast members include Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, among others.

James Gunn’s “Superman” is scheduled to premiere in theaters on July 11, 2025, distributed by Warner Bros.
