An Oscar-winning music conductor, Aladdin, and a police officer walk into a bar, and what happens? They decide to team up for an epic space sci-fi adventure. According to Variety, J.K. Simmons, Mena Massoud, and Trevor Copp will star in the coming-of-age film Spaceman. Directed by Dan Abramovici, known for writing over 30 episodes of Fairly OddParents: A New Wish and Ben’s at Home, Spaceman marks his directorial debut. Previously, Abramovici only directed one episode of television and some short films.

Spaceman follows an artist on a journey to rediscover his creative passion. Copp leads the film as the titular character, with Simmons playing his imposter syndrome and Massoud filling the role of his passion. The film delves into themes of identity, artistic expression, and mental health. Launching a career with a feature film can be challenging, but securing a talented cast like Simmons, Massoud, and Copp suggests Abramovici could be onto something special with Spaceman.

Where else have you seen the ‘Spaceman’ cast? Simmons has proven himself to be a significant name in Hollywood over the last 20+ years. He first gained fame playing J. Jonah Jameson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man movies. Later, Simmons won an Oscar for his performance opposite Miles Teller in Whiplash and received another Academy Award nomination in 2022, though the award went to Tony Kotsur for his role in CODA.

Massoud is best known for playing Aladdin in Disney’s 2019 live-action film. He has starred in other notable projects like The Royal Treatment and The Sacrifice Game alongside actors such as Olivia Scott Welch and Laura Marano. Copp, known for his roles in Apostolate Now, The Dwelling, and Odd Squad, will have a chance to further establish himself by working alongside Hollywood heavyweights Simmons and Massoud.

Spaceman does not yet have an official release date. Check out the trailer for the film above and stay tuned for future updates. In the meantime, you can watch Simmons as Omni-Man in the hit animated series, Invincible, now streaming on Prime Video.
