Shaboozey has been a prominent advocate for Black country artists, and his latest opportunity came on a significant platform. The 29-year-old artist performed “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” at the 2024 BET Awards, with a special appearance from J-Kwon, the record’s muse.

The performance took the form of a reimagined speakeasy, complete with attendees playing pool, enjoying drinks at the bar, and dancing. Hailing from Fairfax, Va., Shaboozey played guitar alongside a live band, leading the audience in a collective intoxication before an unexpected twist unfolded.

Toward the end of his set, J-Kwon emerged from behind the bar, and together they performed a mashup of “A Bar Song” and “Tipsy.” The St. Louis artist brought high energy, showcasing solidarity with Shaboozey in a remarkable intergenerational collaboration.

Shaboozey’s year has been groundbreaking, especially with his features on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album in March. He appeared on tracks like “Spaghetti” and “Sweet * Honey * Buckin.” In late May, he released his own LP, Where I’ve Been, Isn’t Where I’m Going. The 12-song collection features collaborations with Noah Cyrus, BigXthaPlug, and Paul Cauthen.

The success of “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” has been phenomenal. The track climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and secured the top spot on the Hot Country Songs chart. In April, Shaboozey released two remixes of the hit song, featuring Alesso and David Guetta. In a year focused on reclaiming country music—a conversation reminiscent of the 2022 house music revival—Shaboozey’s rise is timely and significant.
