Jake Paul Challenges Mike Tyson After Defeating Mike Perry

Jake Paul decisively defeated Mike Perry in a one-sided boxing match last night, culminating in a sixth-round knockout. Following the victory, Paul turned his sights on another renowned Mike—boxing legend Mike Tyson.

Initially, Paul was set to face Tyson instead of Perry. Both fighters had agreed to an event at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, which was to be streamed exclusively on Netflix. Unfortunately, Tyson had an ulcer flare-up while on a flight in May, forcing the much-criticized bout to be postponed to November. After his victory over Perry, a former MMA athlete who has also excelled in bare-knuckle boxing, Paul redirected his focus to Tyson.

“He’s tough as nails, but I just hit too hard and he took a lot of damage,” Paul commented about Perry after the fight. “Mike Tyson, you’re next. It’s anyone, anytime, anyplace.”

Jake Paul has carved a significant niche for himself in boxing. He transitioned from acting and social media influencing to become a high-profile boxer, often challenging MMA fighters. Alongside Perry, who faced his second professional boxing match after a knockout loss in 2015, Paul has defeated a series of notable names. His victories include Ben Askren, a former Bellator and ONE Welterweight Champion; Tyron Woodley, former UFC Welterweight Champion (defeated twice); Anderson Silva, former UFC Middleweight Champion; and Nate Diaz, a former UFC star.

Paul’s success in and out of the ring, combined with the fame of his MMA opponents, has made him one of boxing’s biggest draws. This popularity persuaded Netflix to venture into live sports by hosting the unconventional bout between Paul and Tyson.

Mike Tyson, known as “The Baddest Man on the Planet,” has his glory days far behind him. Tyson, who was once the world heavyweight champion and one of the sport’s most famous figures, last fought professionally in 2005 at the age of 38. He made a surprising return to the ring in an exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020. However, now much older and less active, Tyson faces a sizable challenge against Paul, who has fought nine times professionally since Tyson’s exhibition match.

Fans, media, and boxing insiders have raised concerns about sanctioning a fight between such an age and activity mismatch. Despite Tyson’s recent health issues, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulations approved the bout as a professional fight, scheduled for eight two-minute rounds.
