James Corden Reveals First Look at Final Gavin & Stacey Episode Filming

James Corden has shared an exciting behind-the-scenes image from the first day on set of the final episode of Gavin & Stacey, set to air this Christmas.

On his Instagram, Corden, who has charmed audiences as the West Ham United devotee ‘Smithy’ since the BBC sitcom began in 2007, posted a photo with the caption: “Day 1. Here we go x.”

The image depicts Smithy’s car and an advert for his self-employed builder and decorator business, complete with the tagline: “If your husband won’t do it – I will… tilin [sic], roofin [sic], plasterin [sic], & feng shui.” A phone number for Smithy’s services is also visible in the picture.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that the final episode had been written. Corden excitedly announced: “Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James.”

The much-anticipated episode will pick up directly from the 2019 Christmas special. That special captivated over 17 million viewers when it first aired, making it the most-watched TV episode in a decade.

The previous episode left fans on the edge of their seats with a cliffhanger. Nessa, portrayed by co-writer Ruth Jones, revealed her feelings for Smithy and proposed to him, leaving their relationship in a state of uncertainty following the birth of their son, ‘Neil the Baby’.

Gavin & Stacey originally aired over three seasons from 2007 to 2010. It started on BBC Three, quickly achieved cult classic status, and then moved to BBC One. The series garnered two Bafta TV awards and a National Television Award.

For the final episode, viewers can expect to see Matthew Horne and Joanna Page reprising their roles as the titular couple. Other familiar faces, including Rob Brydon as Uncle Bryn and Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb as Gavin’s parents, are also expected to return.

Despite the success of the 2019 episode, it did not come without controversy. Nessa and Uncle Bryn’s rendition of ‘Fairytale of New York’ by The Pogues included a homophobic slur from the original song, which sparked backlash.

After receiving over 800 complaints, a re-edited version of the episode was aired on repeat with the offensive phrase removed. This decision was made by the show’s production company, Fulwell 73.

In a statement, Fulwell 73 explained: “In keeping with the programme’s themes of joy, love, and inclusivity, Fulwell 73 have decided to re-edit the song. We are grateful to the BBC for allowing us to make this change.”

A BBC spokesperson added: “We respect their decision to make the edit. Attitudes can change over time, and we appreciate that language is a sensitive and important topic for some people.”
