James Corden has announced that he and Ruth Jones have completed the script for the final episode of their popular sitcom Gavin & Stacey.

The duo confirmed earlier this year in May that the series, which originally aired on the BBC from 2007 to 2010 and then returned for a Christmas special in 2019, would have one last episode airing on Christmas Day 2024.

Corden, age 45, who recently moved back to the UK after spending eight years hosting The Late, Late Show in the United States, shared with radio host Chris Evans that he and Jones, 57, finalized their screenplay earlier this week.

Speaking on Evans’s Virgin Radio breakfast show, Corden detailed how he met up with Jones on Thursday night (18 July) after his family had attended her performance in Sister Act in the West End. The pair then proceeded to finalize their changes to the script.

“It was my niece Ellen’s 18th birthday yesterday,” Corden told Evans. “My mum, dad, sisters, their partners, and my nephew all went to see Ruth’s Sister Act for her birthday. They decided against seeing my play [The Constituent at the Old Vic] for something more uplifting.”

“Afterwards, I went to meet them in Ruth’s dressing room. We had a glass of champagne, and once they left to catch their train, Ruth and I walked back to her place,” he continued.

“We sat down for a drink, sent a photo to our cast’s chat group saying we’d finished our shows and rewrites, and that the script would be on its way to them. I reckon they’ll receive it within the next few days.”

Corden also admitted that the initial script for the special episode was too lengthy, so he and Jones worked on cutting it down.

“We’ve spent the past few weeks really trying to make it as concise as possible,” he revealed.

Gavin & Stacey follows the relationship between Essex native Gavin (Mathew Horne) and Welsh girlfriend Stacey (Joanna Page), as well as the lives of their best friends, Smithy and Nessa, played by Corden and Jones.

The previous Christmas special, which set BBC viewing records, ended with a cliffhanger as Nessa got down on one knee to propose to Smithy after years of an on-and-off relationship.

The new episode is set to feature the return of long-standing cast members like Rob Brydon, Alison Steadman, and Larry Lamb.
