James Darren, best remembered for his role as the charming Moondoggie in the beloved Gidget films, has passed away at the age of 88. His family confirmed that he died peacefully on Monday at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, following complications from a heart-related illness.

Darren’s son, Jim Moret, who is a correspondent for Inside Edition, expressed his grief and disbelief, saying, “I always thought he would pull through because he was so cool. He was always cool.”

The actor first captured audiences’ hearts in the original 1959 film Gidget, where he starred alongside the iconic Sandra Dee. His portrayal of Moondoggie paved the way for subsequent appearances in the sequels, Gidget Goes Hawaiian in 1961 and Gidget Goes to Rome in 1963.

In addition to his film success, Darren made a name for himself on television. He played Officer Jim Corrigan in the popular 1980s police drama T.J. Hooker. Later, in the 1990s, he gained recognition for his role as the holographic lounge singer Vic Fontaine on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Aside from acting, Darren also had a successful career as a pop singer and television director. In the early 1960s, he achieved musical fame with hits such as Goodbye Cruel World, which soared to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961. Another notable track, Her Royal Majesty, written by the legendary songwriting duo Carole King and Gerry Goffin, also reached the top 10 in 1962.

Born in Philadelphia, Darren had his share of famous admirers throughout his life. In a conversation with author Tom Beaver, he recounted a memorable encounter with Bruce Springsteen. While at a pizza shop with a friend, he spotted the rock icon, and mustered up the courage to introduce himself.

Darren shared, “I walked up to him and said, ‘Hi, I don’t want to interrupt you, but my name is James Darren. I just want to tell you I’m a big fan. I love all your stuff.’ And he said, ‘James Darren? I bought “Goodbye Cruel World” in Freehold, New Jersey.’ Isn’t that sweet?”

His contributions to both film and television established him as a significant figure in the entertainment industry. Fans and fellow actors alike remember him not only for his iconic roles but also for his undeniable charm and charisma both on and off the screen.

Darren’s legacy will continue to resonate through his memorable performances and the impact he has made throughout his illustrious career. His dedication to his craft and the joy he brought to audiences will not be forgotten.
