James Gunn Reveals New Helmet in Season 2 Set Photo

Production on Peacemaker season 2 is progressing, and fans got an unexpected treat with a sneak peek at John Cena’s new gear from a surprise set photo. James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios and the mastermind behind the Peacemaker TV series, maintained his tradition of honoring the origins of cinematic characters as depicted in comics. Today marks a special occasion—the anniversary of Peacemaker’s first appearance in Fightin’ 5 #40. Gunn celebrated this milestone on social media and teased an exciting new helmet for Cena’s character in the upcoming season.

“On this day, #Peacemaker aka Christopher Smith made his first comic appearance in Fightin’ 5 #40, in 1966, created by Joe Gill and Pat Boyette,” Gunn wrote. “It’s the role @JohnCena was born to play, and I can’t wait to show you all what we’re cooking up now for @Peacemaker Season 2!”

Fightin’ 5, where Peacemaker made his comic book debut, was originally published by Charlton Comics. When the publisher eventually faded in the 1980s, many of its characters, including Peacemaker, were acquired by DC Comics. This acquisition also included other notable characters such as Captain Atom, Judo Master, The Question, and Blue Beetle. These characters have since become significant figures within DC’s universe. Only Judo Master, played by Nhut Le, appeared in the first season of Peacemaker, but Blue Beetle, specifically the Jaime Reyes incarnation, starred in a solo movie that hinted at Charlton’s Ted Kord.

Filming for Peacemaker season 2 began even as James Gunn’s Superman movie was in production. Gunn has confirmed he won’t direct the majority of the episodes in the new season but will helm “some” of them. In addition to Gunn, directors Greg Mottola (Superbad) and Peter Sollett (Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist) are on board for the second season.

Specific plot details for Peacemaker season 2 remain under wraps. However, it is confirmed that John Cena will reprise his role as Christopher Smith/Peacemaker, along with Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase/Vigilante, Jennifer Holland as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee as John Economos, and Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo. In a surprising twist, Robert Patrick has suggested he will return as Christopher Smith’s father, Auggie, in the new season. Moreover, one director hinted that Joel Kinnaman might reprise his role as Rick Flag, which is intriguing given that Peacemaker killed Flag during the events of The Suicide Squad.

The second season of Peacemaker will also feature some new faces. Sol Rodríguez is set to play Sasha Bordeaux, Tim Meadows will take on the role of Langston Fleury, and David Denman will join in a currently undisclosed role. Further connecting James Gunn’s larger DC Universe, Peacemaker season 2 will include Rick Flag, Sr. from the forthcoming animated series Creature Commandos.

With James Gunn’s creative direction and the exciting new developments in store, fans are eagerly anticipating what Peacemaker season 2 will bring. The return of familiar faces, the introduction of new characters, and the overarching connectivity within the DC Universe promise an exhilarating continuation of the story.
