James Gunn Reveals Remaining Filming Schedule

James Gunn’s Superman production has been making significant strides over the past few months, setting the stage for the first live-action installment within Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. Recently, Gunn took to social media to announce that filming in Cleveland, Ohio has wrapped up. Cleveland served as the backdrop for various exterior shots of the fictional city, Metropolis. However, Gunn noted that there are still “a couple weeks left” of production before the project is fully completed.

Gunn has consistently updated fans on social media about the progress of Superman. He confirmed that neither he nor the film’s cast will attend San Diego Comic-Con later this month due to ongoing shooting schedules. “We are not done shooting,” Gunn wrote. “Still a couple weeks left. Just done shooting in Cleveland. And yeah it’s a long shoot… but we’re getting close!!”

According to DC Studios, Superman centers on the titular character’s journey to balance his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent from Smallville, Kansas. He symbolizes truth, justice, and a better tomorrow, and is guided by a sense of human kindness, even in a world where such values may seem outdated.

The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Terence Rosemore as Otis, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/The Engineer, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Christopher McDonald as Ron Troupe.

The film is but one piece of the comprehensive DC Universe slate. The first chapter, kicking off in 2025 with Superman, includes several highly anticipated projects. Following in 2026 is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Other films like The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, and The Authority are currently undated but expected to make significant impacts.

On television, fans have plenty to look forward to as well. The DC Universe will debut with the animated Creature Commandos series. Additionally, there are plans for the sophomore season of Peacemaker and new shows such as Waller, Booster Gold, Lanterns, and Paradise Lost. An animated Jurassic League movie and a live-action Teen Titans movie are also reportedly in the works, although these have yet to be officially confirmed by DC Studios.

James Gunn spoke in January 2023 about his vision for the DC Universe. “A lot of people think it’s going to be Marvel 2.0, and definitely I learned a lot of stuff at Marvel,” Gunn noted. “I think that we have a lot of differences. We are telling a big, huge, central story that is like Marvel, except for, I think that we’re a lot more planned out than Marvel from the beginning because we’ve gotten a group of writers together to work that story out completely. But we’re also creating a universe that is like Star Wars, where there’s different times, different places, different things, or Game of Thrones, where characters are a little bit more morally complex.”

As the production of Superman nears its end, excitement continues to build among fans and the industry alike. With a stellar lineup of characters and intricate storytelling, this film is set to be a compelling addition to the new DC Universe.
