What a blessing it is when we get new Jamey Johnson. Jamey Johnson has already blessed us with one single this year, “21 Guns,” after a near-decade hiatus due to a concussion he suffered in 2010. His last original album was The Guitar Song in 2010, and his last solo single was “You Can” in 2015.

While Johnson was no stranger to the stage over that hiatus, he was a stranger to the recording booth. I frankly think Johnson could have dropped this one single and not released anything for another few years, and fans would have been happy, but he has heard our cries for new music and is blessing us again.

Today, Johnson took to social media to announce not one but two new singles. Yes, folks, you read that right, TWO singles. Next week, on July 27th, Johnson will release “What A View” and “Trudy” featuring Randy Houser.

“What A View” seems to be a Jamey Johnson original, and most are assuming “Trudy” with Randy Houser will be a cover of the iconic Charlie Daniels Band single. “Trudy” was released in 1970 by Daniels and appeared on his self-titled debut album. The opening line is easily recognizable and sets the tone for the rest of the rocking track.

“Call up Trudy on the telephone Send a letter in the mail Tell her I’m hung up in Dallas…”

Johnson has been known to cover “Trudy” with the Southern rock group Blackberry Smoke, so I think the probability of this being a cover is high. This is a cover that Johnson makes his own and does Charlie Daniel justice with.

While every New Music Friday comes with its list of exciting releases, I am already looking past this week and onto the next for these two singles to drop. Jamey Johnson is SO back.
