On September 17, the iconic alt-rock band Jane’s Addiction announced the cancellation of the remainder of their tour following a troubling incident involving lead singer Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro on stage. The incident occurred during a performance where Farrell attempted to strike Navarro’s guitar while he was engaged in a solo, leading to a dramatic disruption of the show.
In a statement released on Monday, the band shared their difficult decision to step back and take time apart. “As such, they will be cancelling the remainder of the tour,” the statement read, reflecting on the need for a break from touring after such a public altercation.
After being removed from the stage due to the incident, Farrell acknowledged the seriousness of his actions. He expressed regret in a statement to Variety, apologizing to Navarro, his bandmates, fans, and family. “This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize,” he said.
Farrell took full responsibility for his outburst, describing it as a breaking point that led to “inexcusable behavior.” His acknowledgment of personal accountability was an important part of the response to the incident.
The remaining band members—Navarro, Eric Avery, and Stephen Perkins—also released a joint statement outlining their feelings concerning the cancellation of the tour. They cited Farrell’s ongoing struggles with mental health as a significant factor in their decision to halt their performances.
“Due to a continuing pattern of behavior and the mental health difficulties of our singer Perry Farrell, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to discontinue the current US tour,” the statement explained. Concern for the well-being of Farrell, along with that of the other band members, influenced their decision to end the tour early.
The band expressed their deep regrets about the situation, particularly for their fans who had purchased tickets in anticipation of the shows. “We can see no solution that would either ensure a safe environment on stage or reliably allow us to deliver a great performance on a nightly basis. Our hearts are broken,” they lamented.
This tour marked Jane’s Addiction’s first in 14 years, following the release of their latest album, Imminent Redemption, in July. The cancellation has left fans disappointed, as they were eager to see the band’s return to the stage.
The impact of the incident underscores the complexities of life on tour and the personal challenges that can arise amidst the pressures of performing.
