Jay Park on Garlic Juice, K-Pop Career, and Authenticity

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Korean American star Jay Park is well-known for his multifaceted career, which spans being a rapper, R&B artist, and a garlic health drink enthusiast.

Park recently held his first fan meeting in more than a decade in Seoul, South Korea. During the two-day event, he performed his hits and, true to his reputation, showcased his dedication to garlic health drinks by mincing garlic on stage for two lucky fans who won a draw. The audience added a unique flair by waving garlic-shaped light sticks throughout the show.

Originally from Washington state, Park’s journey into the South Korean pop industry began rather unexpectedly. His mother suggested he try out for a K-pop audition, which he initially believed to be just a talent show. Relocating to South Korea, he trained under JYP Entertainment and debuted as a member of the K-pop band 2PM.

His time with 2PM was cut short in 2009 due to the resurfacing of old online comments criticizing his struggle to adapt to a new culture. The backlash from the media and public led to his departure from the band and his return to the United States. However, public sentiment shifted once people understood that his comments had been taken out of context, sparking a strong demand for his return. He successfully re-emerged as a solo artist in 2010.

Since then, Park has solidified his position as a prominent figure in the Asian entertainment industry. Apart from his achievements as a recording artist, he has founded three well-known South Korean music labels and launched an entrepreneurial venture with his own Korean liquor brand.

In a recent interview, Park opened up about his long-awaited fan meeting, being the first K-pop star to create an OnlyFans account, and his plans to venture into K-pop management with two bands set to debut soon.

Regarding the fan meeting, Park shared that he received immense support and love from fans, yet always felt undeserving of it. He wanted people to know the real him, both as a person and an artist. He realized that fan engagements were about mutual support, creating the perfect opportunity to connect with his supporters.

When asked about his public persona, Park clarified that there is no duality to his identity. He performs under his real name, Jay Park, and is not concerned about recognition or acceptance anymore, expressing a preference for working with like-minded individuals on projects he genuinely enjoys.

Reflecting on the fan meeting, Park mentioned that many fans seemed shy. The absence of a dedicated fan management system meant that fans, scattered around different places, felt awkward coming together after 11 years. Nonetheless, he was glad to celebrate with them after such a long time.

Discussing his decision to open an OnlyFans account, Park revealed it was a strategic move to promote his song “McNasty,” which is reminiscent of his earlier track “Mommae.” Given the promotional challenges and limited budget, he needed a creative approach. Contrary to popular misconceptions about OnlyFans, he used the platform’s branding for song promotion, which turned out to be a successful strategy.

On the subject of keeping up with trends, Park stated that he does not actively follow them. He adheres to his own moral and ethical standards, which have guided him to his current success. By avoiding shortcuts and striving to be a good person, he has journeyed far in his career.

Park also spoke about his Korean liquor brand, WONSOJU, which is now selling globally. He aimed to elevate the perception of soju, a traditional Korean distilled alcoholic beverage, showcasing it as a premium drink comparable to high-quality whiskey and sake. He expressed his fondness for both soju and wine.

In another exciting revelation, Park hinted at the release of an upcoming album slated for October.
