Jay Weinberg Seeking Therapy to Cope with Slipknot Departure

Jay Weinberg has revealed that he has been working with a therapist to come to terms with his unexpected departure from Slipknot. The band abruptly parted ways with their drummer in November 2023, following a performance at a festival in Mexico. The announcement was made via their social media platforms, leaving Weinberg, who had been with the band since 2014, shocked and heartbroken.

In a statement shared a few days later, Weinberg admitted to being “heartbroken and blindsided,” as he only learned of the band’s decision on the morning they posted it online. Faced with the emotional upheaval, he began seeing a therapist to help him process this significant and sudden life change.

“Truth be told, I’m at kind of a point where I’m not quite yet really ready to talk about [the split], really. And that’s not to dismiss the conversation, but I’ve spent time, and spend time, just processing the entire experience. And the experience not being the last six months, but really the last 10 years,” he said during an appearance on the “One Life One Chance With Toby Morse” podcast.

Weinberg emphasized the importance of therapy in his healing process. “I have a fantastic therapist who helps me. Before I speak on it, it’s important for me to do the right work of processing these events that, you know, you spend 10 years exclusively committed to one thing. There’s a lot to process that on the other side… I think there is definitely a time where I’ll speak to my lived experience over those 10 years — just not quite yet,” he shared.

Writing has also been a key tool for him in processing his experiences. He mentioned that documenting his journey has been therapeutic and hinted at the possibility of turning his writings into a book.

Over his life, Weinberg has experienced therapy a few times and noted that different therapists can suit different stages or challenges in one’s life. He urged people seeking professional help not to give up if they don’t feel an immediate connection with a therapist. “It may take time to establish that type of rapport, or you may just need to find another one,” he explained.

“They’re out there. It’s a worthwhile thing of searching for, if you need it,” he concluded.

Fortunately for Weinberg, a new chapter in his career began in March, when he was officially named the drummer of Suicidal Tendencies. This new role marks a fresh start for him, and he is focused on healing and creating more music.
