Jeff Bridges Returns, Light Bikes, and New Nine Inch Nails Music

Disney unveiled the first footage of “Tron: Ares,” the third film in the sci-fi franchise set inside a computer mainframe. During Disney’s marathon presentation at the D23 Expo, cast members Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Greta Lee, and Jeff Bridges revealed the highly anticipated first look.

To the delight of fans, a title card at the end of the footage announced that Nine Inch Nails, the industrial rock and electronica band founded by Trent Reznor and joined by Atticus Ross in 2016, composed the score.

Leto stars as Ares, a digital universe program tasked with entering the real world. Lee plays Eve Kim, “a brilliant programmer” whose significant work facilitates Ares’ entry into our world. Peters portrays Julian Dillinger, sharing a last name with the villain of the original “Tron” film released in 1982.

“Dillinger doesn’t always mean great things for those on the grid,” Peters remarked.

The footage commences with Dillinger presenting a keynote about the future of humanity, saying, “Since time began, man has gazed at the stars and wondered, am I alone? Turns out we’ve been looking in the wrong direction, because intelligent life does exist — but it’s not out there, it’s in here. So much talk of AI and big tech, virtual worlds, when are we gonna get there? Well folks, we’re not going. They are coming here.”

Joachim Rønning takes the helm as director, working from a script by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne. The film boasts a stellar cast including Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, Hasan Minaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Sarah Desjardins.

“Technology and AI is especially omnipresent in all our lives,” Bridges noted before the screening. “What a perfect time to revisit this amazing world. More appropriately, to have this amazing world visit us.”

“Tron: Ares” adds another chapter to one of modern film history’s longest-running trilogies. Despite its initial box office struggle, “Tron,” written and directed by Steven Lisberger, was celebrated as the first feature film to extensively use computer-generated imagery. The story focuses on a video game developer named Kevin Flynn, played by Bridges, who is unwittingly transported into a harsh digital universe. Bridges reprised his role in 2010’s “Tron: Legacy,” directed by Joseph Kosinski.

“It’s really unbelievable to think we made the original in 1982,” Bridges said during the presentation. “It’s amazing — we never thought we would have this legacy that’s continued on all these years.”

Bridges revealed on a podcast in April that he will be returning for “Tron: Ares.” However, “Legacy” costars Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde, who played Flynn’s grown son and a sentient program, respectively, are not set to appear in the new film.

Leto first signed onto “Tron: Ares” in 2017 as both a star and producer. The film is also being produced by Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver, and Emma Ludbrook.

More to come.
