Jena Malone and Son Danced to This Taylor Swift Song (Exclusive)

Jena Malone knows how to choose the perfect song, especially when it comes to dancing with her son, Ode Mountain, at home. The talented actress shares her 8-year-old with Ethan DeLorenzo. Their most recent dance session was set to Taylor Swift’s “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.”

“He loves cuss words now because he’s 8, and she’s like, ‘Lights, camera, bitch, smile,'” Malone told PEOPLE in a recent interview. She explained how they were just letting loose in the living room, dancing enthusiastically together.

Malone stars in the newly released film Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1, now available On Demand. She caught up with PEOPLE for their One Last Thing segment, revealing some personal tidbits and recent experiences.

One of Malone’s current passions is emergency preparedness. She recently completed a CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) course and has signed up to be a volunteer firefighter in Burbank. “I’m so obsessed with emergency prep and daydream about getting the neighborhood together and what kind of drills we’re going to do,” she shared.

When it comes to her perfect day off, Malone’s routines have evolved since becoming a mother. “Before my son, I would lie in bed, order food all day, and binge-watch any dating reality show, simultaneously playing solitaire on my phone,” she recalled. Now, her days are filled with more active and engaging moments with her son.

A recent moment of pure joy for Malone came during the celebration for the end of her son’s second-grade school year. He received an award, and as soon as he got it, he looked up to find her eyes. “I love when we get to share those little unspoken moments together,” she said, clearly cherishing their bond.

Meeting Patti Smith during one of the Hunger Games premieres made a lasting impression on Malone. Smith had contributed a song for the film series. “She was so kind and cool,” Malone gushed, admitting she was starstruck and unsure of what to do with her hands. Fortunately, they took a photo together, capturing the memorable encounter.
