Jennifer Connelly: ‘Snowpiercer’ Season 4 Reaches a Fulfilling Finale

Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Connelly says the fourth and final season of her post-apocalyptic train drama, Snowpiercer, brings the story to a satisfying conclusion, while also leaving room for future continuations. “It ends in an interesting place, but could also be interpreted as a beginning, if that’s what people decide they want to do with it,” Connelly said in a recent interview. “I thought it was a fulfilling ending.”

Co-starring Daveed Diggs, Sean Bean, Iddo Goldberg, Katie McGuinness, Mickey Sumner, Rowan Blanchard, and Roberto Urbina, the show is based on a 1982 graphic novel and a 2013 movie of the same name. The series initially aired on TNT, which filmed the fourth season but later decided not to broadcast it as the network shifted away from scripted drama programming. AMC stepped in to pick up the final episodes.

Connelly expressed surprise at TNT’s decision not to air the already filmed episodes. For a period, the fate of the final season was uncertain. “I am really happy for everyone who worked hard on the show and for people who were excited about the final season, they’ll be able to watch it now,” she shared.

The series began in 2020, with the last new episode premiering in 2022. Snowpiercer follows the crew and passengers of a continuous train that circles a frozen world after a failed attempt to halt climate change. Season 3 ended with half of the passengers leaving the train to establish a camp in a thawing landscape named New Eden. Connelly’s character Melanie remains on the train with fellow engineer and boyfriend Ben (Goldberg) to care for the remaining passengers. Meanwhile, Melanie’s brilliant daughter Alex (Blanchard) and heroic community leader Layton (Diggs) explore the potential of the outside world.

The plot takes a dramatic turn with the introduction of a team of “international peace-keeping forces” that no one knew existed, who violently take over Snowpiercer, upending plans and endangering lives. Connelly noted that the show addresses significant issues such as climate change, resource sharing, governance, and inequality. “It’s kind of talking about things like climate change and resources, and how we share resources, and how we govern and how we deal with inequity, but it’s doing it in the format of an entertaining, sci-fi-based action show,” Connelly said. “It’s fun to watch, but it also feels like it’s kind of tapping into some things that a lot of us are thinking about.”

As fans reflect on the journey Snowpiercer took them on, the ending brings both closure and potential new beginnings. The series has successfully weaved together gripping sci-fi action with timely social themes, leaving audiences both entertained and thoughtful.
