Jermaine Jenas Goes Viral: What Does ‘Securing the Coin’ Mean After BBC Sacking?

Jermaine Jenas has recently become a topic of online discussion due to an unusual video that has resurfaced following his dismissal from the BBC.

The former England midfielder was unexpectedly removed from his role at the BBC, where he served as a presenter on The One Show and Match of the Day. The reason for his dismissal centers around accusations of inappropriate behavior.

A BBC spokesperson commented: “We can confirm that he is no longer part of our presenting line-up.”

Jenas expressed his dissatisfaction with the BBC’s decision, stating that there are “two sides to every story” and he intends to discuss the matter with his legal team. He conveyed this during an interview with talkSPORT News.

When questioned about reports suggesting he had sent unsolicited texts to a female staff member at The One Show, Jenas reiterated: “I’m not happy about this situation. I’m going to be speaking to my lawyers about it is all I can say right now.”

Following his departure from the BBC, a peculiar video featuring Jenas has resurfaced. In the video, he appears to be in a pub garden, sipping a pint of beer and rambling about ‘securing the coin.’

Throughout the video, the 41-year-old repeatedly mentions ‘securing the coin,’ saying: “Only certain man know what I’m talking about when it comes to securing the coin. But you just feel like you’ve earnt it, you feel like you deserve it.”

The clip, reportedly filmed in February 2023, ends with Jenas proclaiming: “Go on then, go on,” followed by: “Lovely drop that, lovely drop,” as he shows his dog to the camera.

According to the Daily Mail, Jenas’s video seems to be an impression of TikTok star snowydangernew. The phrase ‘securing the coin’ is believed to be a variation of the slang term ‘securing the bag,’ which Urban Dictionary defines as: “An expression used to describe the act of taking advantage of a situation to obtain something of value.”

The video has since gone viral, with many using it humorously in reference to Jenas’s recent troubles.

Jenas has opted not to provide further details regarding the nature of the complaint against him. He has avoided addressing whether there was more than one complainant, if he was taken aback by the complaints, or any specifics regarding the timeline of events leading to his dismissal.

When pressed, he also declined to discuss if legal proceedings are currently in progress, whether he believes he can continue a career in sports presenting or the broader industry, and if he feels he owes any apologies related to his BBC exit.

After retiring from professional football in 2014, Jenas transitioned into football punditry. He joined The One Show as a presenter in 2020. Throughout his football career, which began in 2001, he played for teams such as Nottingham Forest, Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa, and Queens Park Rangers. Jenas also earned 21 caps for the England national team.
