Jerry Fuller, Writer of ‘Travelin’ Man’ and ‘Young Girl,’ Dies at 85

Jerry Fuller, the songwriter known for iconic hits like “Travelin’ Man” and “Young Girl,” has passed away at the age of 85.

Fuller’s death was confirmed by his wife to the New York Times, who reported that the songwriter died on July 18 due to complications from lung cancer.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, in 1938, Fuller’s initial exposure to music came from performing in talent shows alongside his older brother, Bill. Determined to pursue his musical ambitions, he dropped out of college and relocated to Los Angeles in 1959.

In the fall of that year, Fuller had his first minor success with a rockabilly version of the country song “Tennessee Waltz.” Though he possessed vocal talent, Fuller’s greatest accomplishments came from writing hits for other artists.

In 1961, Fuller penned “Travelin’ Man,” a tune about a young man with romantic interests around the world. “It’s a fairly simple song,” Fuller conceded in the documentary The Wrecking Crew. He mentioned using an atlas to find names for the women in different countries, crafting a song about having a girl in every port.

Glen Campbell, a friend and frequent collaborator, helped Fuller create the demo for “Travelin’ Man.” Originally intended for Sam Cooke, the song eventually landed with Ricky Nelson. “Travelin’ Man” became a global sensation, selling over six million copies. Fuller and Nelson continued their collaborative success with additional hits like “A Wonder Like You,” “Young World,” and “It’s Up to You.”

By the late 1960s, Fuller had diversified his roles in the music industry, working as a record producer and talent scout while continuing to write songs. One notable success was producing O.C. Smith’s rendition of “Little Green Apples,” which reached No. 2 on the Billboard chart. However, his most significant triumph was with Gary Puckett, whom Fuller discovered performing in a San Diego bowling alley.

Gary Puckett and the Union Gap achieved a series of hits under Fuller’s guidance, including “Young Girl,” “Lady Willpower,” and “Over You.” Fuller wrote and produced all three tracks, with “Young Girl” becoming one of the most recognizable songs of the era.

Fuller’s songwriting talents extended to other artists as well, including Johnny Mathis, John Anderson, Andy Williams, Ray Price, and Reba McEntire.
